Good reviews, guys. There is one features that was in the marketing releases for the 5100 (maybe the 3100, too?) that no one has mentioned, yet -- NFC. Do any S5100 owners also have an Android device that supports NFC and could test this? Or could an S5100 owner take a look in the manual to see if it is described as a feature? While all of the press releases listed it, I don't see anything about that feature on the Sony UK web site. I'm curious about what capability the feature might provide.

I don't see any reference to NFC in the manual for the 3100. There is a setting in the network settings that lists external remote devices. I'm on iOS so no NFC for me. Perhaps it's a feature saved for the 5100.

Perhaps the tv sideview app on android uses NFC handshaking to pair the phone with the player? All the sony demos at ces on NFC i saw appeared the NFC device for sonys bravia tvs were in the tvs remote control unit. Certainly the remote supplied with the 3100 is the same part number as last year.

The remote features for the S5100 initially looked good, but upon entering an app (eg: Netflix) and clicking Start on Sideview, there were no context specific features. It didn't display a movie selection in Netflix, it didn't show me content in AOL HD, etc.

Overall, a bit disappointing. I'm not sure it warrants anyone upgrading from the S590 unless they are very annoyed by speed of apps or depend on the device for Netflix. Based on what I've read about the S790 (Sony is too stupid to sell it in Canada), the S5100 would be a downgrade in both connections and features. I'm not going to return it, but I continue to be interested in whether the other manufacturers made more significant advances in their players this year.

If anyone has questions about it, I'll do my best to answer them. I saw the Cinavia question, but I don't have any content handy to test that out.

When you say it will display a guide for whatever service you are using, can you elaborate. I was only able to essentially launch a service from tv sideview and no more.

In the old mediaremote app you could browse content within mediaremote for say crackle and then play it on the bdp. I don't see that functionality in tv sideview.

Hey so my 4 year old Sony blu ray just died and I need to replace it with an option that has a coax out. Is it worth it to get the S3100 or S5100 for $108 and $128 respectively? Or will this S390 Serve me well enough for $50. The thing that intrigues me about these newer models is the ability to "throw" media from my tablet to the tv. Anyone test this feature yet? Bugs observed in the current firmware on the S3100:

AAC files (over DLNA), display no meta data.

"add slideshow BGM" option not available.

TV Sideview. (on iOS)
1) Search does not search across local media (even though its suppose to),
2) Netflix search is just completely broken. Not only can it not find the correct title in netflix, "play on Bluray Player" just launches Netflix, and doesnt actually play the title (on Netflix).
3) DLNA selection only displays a limited amount of files. Many issues attempting to play the file via TV Sideview on Player. Lots of disconnects. Could be a firmware or TV Sideview issue.

Its depends on what folks mean by "throw media".

Even with the x90 players, you were able to throw media from apps on your phone to the player. It worked in several ways:

1) Via a DLNA remote app. Browse your DLNA server (on your phone/tablet) and "throw" it to the player. This worked for both video, audio and photos. Apps tested: Audio Remote (sony) - supports audio only, imedashare - supports audio, video and photos , tv sideview (sony) - supports audio, video, and photos.
2) Via the Sony Mediaremote app. You could browse select Sony Entertainment Network service provides, e.g crackle via the remote app and then "throw" them to the player.
3) Via the Sony Mediaremote app, you could browse the web and throw the page to the player

The x100 players do similar ... but I haven't found a way to do option 2) currently. You're also suppose to be able to search for something via TV Sideview and then throw it to your player ... stuff like netflix, youtube, local media ... but right now its very buggy.

Just to clarify "TV Sideview" works with both x90 and x100 players, its just the functionality is a bit different depending on the player family.

Above this, the new players (at least the 5100) may have NFC capability too ... but not sure how that works, or whats possible.

BTW, the price at J&R for the 3100 is $1 off, not $10.

Coupon in the top right that says $10 off for orders over $100 works to take the ten bucks off on J&R.

So when that CNET article says the app lets you throw media what do you think they are talking about?

I just received my new BDP-S3100. It replaced my very good LG BD-390. I made the change because I wanted Wi-Fi access to Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc. that the LG could not get.
I am NOT a techie.
I am having a problem with the 3100 that I would appreciate any and all advice on. I am someone who likes a SHARP live looking HD picture for all of my viewing including film as opposed to the blurrier, perhaps rich, look of traditional film. I like my movies insofar as possible to have the same look I see when I watch a live sports event or evening news on TV.
As contrasted with what I saw on my older LG, when I Wi-Fi stream shows from Hulu or Netflix thru my new 3100, the resulting picture looks rich but far less detailed than what I am used to. Downton Abbey, Breaking Bad, whatever - all the same result. I have tried upping the sharpness setting on my TV (Sony Bravia KDL-46EX500), and that helps a little but not much.
I can't help but think that the new Sony 3100 MUST be able to deliver as sharp a picture as my old LG and that the problem must lie somewhere in my settings not being optimal.
Any suggestions for sharpening up my picture? Thanks.

All the video processing options are off on the player by default so not sure what more you can do. Have you tried something like a BD Disk to make sure you can compare your old player and the new player with identical sourcs material.

I am not sure what you mean when you say ""all the video processing options are 'off' on the player by default." I have fiddled with settings while trying to improve this situation. Currently the settings under "screen settings" all read "auto" except the first three (TV type, screen format, and DAVD aspect ratio."
There is one odd thing. All of the categories just described say "auto" in lights to the right of the category; for example, "BD rom 24p Ouput" says "auto." But one category, "Output video resolution" is blank next to it. When I click on that category, a notice comes up with various choices, one of which is "auto", which is lit up, along with language saying that "auto" is the standard selection. I have clicked on "auto" there a number of times, but still the word "auto" still does not appear when I go back to "output video resolution." It continues to be blank next to that. Could this have something to do with my problem?

During playback of video (this does not apply to Netflix or Vudu), but most other video, and certainly Bluray or DVD play back, hit the options button.

There you will find additional video playback settings .... when I said they are off, if I remember they are off by default.

Are the new players that much quicker at loading than the 590?

I am wanting a 3D Blu-Ray player for the theater and I only really have the following concerns:

1. I want to control the Blu-Ray player over IP with my iRule app which I assume both Sony players will work.
2. I want to view movie trailers by streaming them from my PC using the Blu-Ray player. Currently I am using a Panasonic Blu-Ray player which will get moved upstairs but it only supports MKV files which means I lose quality over using the MP4 downloads from the internet in the conversion.
3. Speeds isn't necessarily a must but I don't want a sluggish player and I'm not sure when we say slow with the 590 how slow we are talking. I assume the players are still responsive but just slow at loading. Is this correct?

If the 590 works for me I'm probably better of saving the extra money and getting it over the 5100.

If you read above the S3100 was faster than the S790 at loading both BDlive enabled and regular disks by around 10 seconds. I only tested a couple of disks, so wouldn't read too much into that ... but still quite impressive since last year the S790 was apparently faster than the S590 ... but I never really noticed a big difference.

I posted in the S790 thread, that i did find when navigating a large local shared library over DLNA, the XMB seemed a tag sluggish on the 3100, when on the 790 ... didn't notice that.

as far as your other questions

According to iRule, sony players will work (LINK), but I don't know if anyone has actually tested it with the new models. Chances are very high that they work the same.

The only problem I can see is ... if Mediaremote is a prerequisite ... thats bad news, because Mediaremote does not work with the x100 players. Only TV side view works.

Where as with the x90 players, both mediaremote and tv side view works.

The assumption would be that the newer players would work with iRule as well. I'll think it over and if I don't lean towards the 5100 I'll probably pick up the S590 at BB and make sure it works.

hey all, i just bought this bd player(5100) but am having issues with the hdmi output. It works fine when connected directly to the tv but when connected thru my avr (marrantz av7701) I get nothing, no audio or video. My previous player had no issues nor do my Boxee, Cable box, ps3, or HTPC so i dont think its an issue with my avr. Any ideas? Already swapped cables and inputs etc.

Yea, i'm in Canada. Bought it at futureshop.

So I narrowed the issue down to some sort of issue with the TV(Shard 70 inch LCD). If I hook everything up to my Panasonic tv it works just fine. What the heck?

If you don't mind trying again, try cables again. I know you already did. I recently bought samsung 6500 and panasonic 220. They both exhibited the same behaviour. I have several cables and 3 of them worked fine when connected to the tv directly perfectly fine. But, through my denon they didn't. I was fortunate to have cables lying around and found one that worked. The modern 3d capable receivers are very picky. For a while I thought the players were defective. Two of the three that didn't work are certified hdmi 1.4 cables with arc. All these cables worked in other systems/connections etc. So, give that a try if you feel like spending some more time. That was my(very recent and surprising) experience.

Re: purchase in US - this unit is for sale here now. Am not sure what rules are on this forum, but I bought it in US -- think BIGGEST Internet electronics seller. And others may well have it also.
I am still interested in any observations people may have about getting a "liver" ---- like like TV type picture out of this unit from streaming sources like Netlix, Hulu, etc. My older LG unit had a better picture for such streamed shows, I am pretty certain.

I think you are probably correct. I just ordered 5 new Slim Cables with Redmere from monoprice as this is what my panasonic TV uses downstairs. Will let you know if its fixed when they arrive tomorrow.

When powering on your devices make sure you power on the display first. I would probably order it in the display first, AVR second, then the Blu-Ray player last. I typically had HDMI handshake issues when I powered on a JVC projector, Denon AVR, and a Panasonic Blu-Ray player when I didn't power them on in that order.

I see that the Sony US web site now has full info on all three new players. I searched the manual for the S5100 and found NO reference to NFC (near field communications), which Sony advertised at CES earlier this year. You're supposed to be able to "tap" your Android phone or tablet (with NFC) on the top of the S5100 (maybe the S3100, too?) and "do something". I'm really curious whether they actually implemented this feature, what you can "do" with the tap, and how well it works. If any owners of S5100 or S3100 also have a recent Android phone, try enabling NFC and see if you get anything..... smile.gif

I don't see any NFC icons on the S5100. I did turn on NFC on my Note 2 and dragged the phone around the top of the S5100 with no result.

Just installed new cables, no luck. Got fed up and dismantled my system downstairs and brought my other Marantz receiver upstairs and it fixed the problem. So the issue is definitely with the receiver since all other components are the same. Receivers are current models, the one that works is an AV7701, and the one that doesn't work is the NR-1603. Posted in the NR-1603 thread to see if I can find out if it’s an issue with mine or everyone’s. Thx
