My next question is:
With the mention of 4k upconversion more and more, will i be forced anytime soon to buy a display that supports that? Currently I have 2 1080p displays a sony from 2010 and a panasonic plasma 2009 model. Both are working great after 3 years of use. I just wondered where home entertainment was going technology wise. I know people with CRT Tvs and a regular DVD player and they're still content. So I know my setup won't be obsolete anytime soon. I just wondered as a whole where the industry was going.

Like I said I don't regularly follow stuff unless I have a need to, or if something is going to change that will specifically affect my usage, and needs.

Watching the season finale of Arrow off Amazon this AM, 5100 reports a speed of 5.7mbps and still no DD 5.1.

Finally got around to testing additional codec support in MKV containers with the x100 series, during DLNA.

Significant improvement. Confirmed VC-1 and MPEG2 is now supported in MKVs.

Just bought the 5100 player today and have a few questions. First, what are the optimal video and audio settings? I've got a 1080p tv, no 3D, and an Onkyo receiver for surround. I apologize if they've already been posted. If so, please point me to the right page. Also, I have the Panny 220 from last year. I can't decide which to use as my primary in the living room an which one in the extra room. Is there going to be any PQ difference between the two? I primarily watch BDs, Amazon Prime and MLB. Which player is generally considered superior, if at all. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Did the FW update to 0160, haven't found any newly introduced bugs in regards to subtitles.

Hey Dave,

What is the netflix with profiles interface supposed to look like on the BDP?

I haven't noticed any changes here. tried on the 590, since that's the series you said got the profiles.

Thanks

Not many people have both players and can compare for you but you do so you'll have to compare for yourself. I have the 5100 and the PQ is excellent. Same thing with the settings but it should look fine right out of the box.

You will be hard pressed to find any AV quality differences in today's BD players on BD disc playback from cheapest BD player to most expensive player. What differs these players apart today is extra features that has very little relation with BD disc playback. For example, Sony players claim to fame, IMO, is DLNA streaming and USB playback of various HD video with HD Audio support. You can playback a BD rip mkv file directly in most cases. Not many BD players can do this. Panasonic is almost laughable in this department (I have the older 110).

One thing I like about the sony players, over the other brands I've tried is if there is a disc in the drive when the unit is powered on, the sony doesn't automatically start playing that disc on power on. One thing I wish sony would change is if i'm in an app such as netflix, vudu etc, and I choose to eject the disc, that it wouldn't quit the current app just to eject the disc. A multi tasking BD player should be possible smartphones can do it.

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to put the Sony in the LR and the Panny in the bonus room. The Panny seems to have more video settings to change such as Chroma process, etc. I'm changin the Sony's deep color to off and set everything to 1080p. Any other recommended settings? Also, I thought I read that the sideview app would allow me to see my iphone videos and pictures through the Sony onto my TV. Is this possible with an ios device and the Sony?

My 390 shows something like this when I first start Netflix:

I've never tried that. But what does work nicely is that within the iOS apps for Youtube and Netflix, you can playback to your Sony player, just like you can with a Google Chromecast device.

I don't get that when starting netflix on either machine, nor did I get any indication of a service update on either one. I have profiles on the computer, but not the BD players. Did you have to do anything special ?

My biggest complaint with my SOny S5100s(aside from the Amazon app) is when you haven't accessed a streaming service for a while and it comes up with the screen saying it's checking for content or something. Then you have to hit a button again when it's done. This should just be done in the background instead of requiring extra button presses to get to a streaming app.

Something between sony and Panasonic would be nice as panasonic players could eject a disc without quitting the current app, but they forced a disc load if powered on with one in the drive sony doesn't so a player that takes both sides and combines then into one would be ideal.

No, I didn't do anything. I only set up profiles on my PC, and they just appeared on my player. Maybe it just hasn't been rolled out to the 590 yet.

Tried that feature with YouTube as well. It worked great.

Yes, US and no Open Connect, if that makes any difference.

no open connect here either, unless brighthouse has employed it sometime recently. Last time I checked the netflix test said I didn't have it when I tested last year.

It's been that way for generations. Something Sony really proud of smile.gif

i usually hit the netflix (dont use amazon even though i am a prime member) button and it goes right to netflix and bypasses that extra internet is ready..." message. i do watch netflix nightly and its usually within 24 hours of the prior days viewing so maybe this matters...

Now, all the sudden, I am back !

Both my sony 790 and my shiny 5100 now plays everything in fantastic HDX and 5.1 surround - just fantastic!
i have done two improvements - I have ditched my VPN service and i have quit the Amzon Instant video, using only Netflix and Vudu.
So now I am streaming HD movies at 9.5 mbps, with that VPN I got max 5.9 mbps.....

Last night I rented at VUDU the fast and furious in HDX. That was for sure a lively experience!!
Fantastic PQ and fantastic sound, just as if I watched the real thing - the blu ray disc.

Now I am happy, and maybe a hint to others, the VPN services offered, you might want to check the streaming speed.

My main reason for renting is watch befor I buy.

Netflix button won't bypass that either. If you didn't use Netflix for a day or two, you will see this annoying screen.

I was just wondering if anyone has had DLNA issues with the x100 series? I turned on my 3100 this morning and nothing would stream from the server. The screen would go black with the spinning gear and just hang and the player hung. This only happened after upgrading and configuring Serviio 1.3.1. I turned the player off and waited and put it back on and it seems ok now. I just wondered if this has happened to anyone else ? Everything seems to be normal again, it was just strange.

Depending on how you upgrade Serviio it may have defaulted back to the 2011 smp-n200/bd profile for a short period.

I had reconfigured it to use my current setup, so I think it may have been a player glitch. Speaking of that though, in OS X is there a way to upgrade Serviio to keep settings? I usually just replace the console and sever app in /Applications.. Most apples store their settings in the perferences folder or in another Apple specific format, which cary over. Serviio seems to store the settings in the app bundle so replacing the old version with the new seems to reset like installing a fully new copy. Is there a way around this?
