hi all, i stumbled across this thread in trying  to find a way to downgrade the firmware of my s5100.  it seems that since the newest firmware release the nhl gamecenter app will load, start to stream, then get stuck "loading"..

i'm hardwired and the stream says 17+Mbps... i could understand if it were wireless but thats not the case. netflix/amazon/pandora all stream w/o a hitch so i figured it's the app.  thus wanting to downgrade the firmware to a previous version.

anyone else have the issue?  or some ideas on what to fix.. i've tried resetting and hard reset too but neither help.

thnx

It's not possible to downgrade the firmware. I can only suggest posting on the sony community forum

A couple of questions regarding the S5100:

I'm in Canada. If I connect this player to the Internet with a U.S. IP address via a VPN will I be able to access U.S. Netflix content?

Will the S5100 allow me to stream 3D content on Netflix?

Thanks in advance.

The answer to the 2nd question is yes; I do it all the time. Not sure about accessing US content in Canada though. Sounds like it would work.

Is there any way to remove internet video services from the player's list? I only make use of Netflix and YouTube. It's pointless for me to have all the others listed, which also means scrolling through the list to find YouTube each time.

anyone have a link to recommended settings? i could only find this : http://www.avsforum.com/t/1396469/official-sony-bdp-s590-and-bdp-390-thread but its about other devices. stuff like downmixing and screen format options as well as color standards are confusing.

also yes about that long list, its useless. my panasonic tv has a much simpler system that i like.

and comparing the audio between the panasonic tv's media player and sony blu-ray, i notice sony is much more bass sounding, is this normal?

I have an issue with my BDP-S5100 and my Pioneer Elite VSX receiver. It has to do with center channel audio not playing when playing a blu-ray disc until I toggle the receiver power off and on. Still looking for an answer. Details are here.

Sort of. Those can't be changed, but you can fully customize the SEN interface and boot straight to it when you turn on the player. However, realize you have a Netflix button, and that Youtube is fairly close to the top.

Bringing this post/issue back up from the dead....didn't play much with my video collection over the summer, but now that it's getting colder I've come back to exploring this further.

All of the MKVs that caused the 5100 to lock up had AVC video encoding and DTS-MA audio encoding. A few of the MKVs with AVC & DTS-MA would play without problems, but the majority of them would cause the 5100 to lock up. MKVs with just the core DTS audio or DD all played fine.

On a hunch I extracted the core DTS using eac3to and then remuxed the MKV file with mkvmerge using just the DTS core audio (leaving out the DTS-MA track). The resultant MKVs all now play fine.

Although Sony's literate indicates that the 5100 should handle MKVs with DTS-MA streamed over DNLA, I suspect something is wrong or buggy. There is a post in the Serviio forum that indicates that the BDP-S790 has a similar problem (http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=11197).

Since neither my ears nor my audio equipment is good enough to notice much difference between DTS and DTS-MA this is an acceptable work around for me. As an additional bonus this reduces the file size by 4 or 5 gigs. I'll be sure to rip any future blu ray backkups using just the DTS track and not DTS-MA and avoid the problem from the start.

Thanks!

That's common problem that I also encountered with S590 as well as S5100. The streaming code is just buggy. It typically happens on a loud sound effect. Play the same video on USB or disc goes without lockup.

Or .... As I've said a million times ....put the same file in a M2TS container complete with MA DTS audio and it will play fine over DLNA.

True, but you lose chapter skipping with M2TS. I would prefer to have chapter skipping instead of DTS-MA. Others may feel differently of course depending upon their needs and setup.

How do you turn off the on-screen display on the 5100?

I feel like I've done my due diligence on trying to find an answer to this. So I am going to post it here. I also don't really know how to word it, so I am not sure I am doing good searches anyway.

So here's what's happening: There are subtitles on the movie I am watching that are not on long enough for me to read, so I pause Netflix and get the pause display thing on my screen. But it never goes away and I cannot find a button that will do this and I can't read the subtitles. So OK, I rewind a couple times and I can read enough to continue. Then, in the movie, there is something written on a page and I feel like it is important to the story so I pause it and the darn pause display is right in front of what I want to see... but I can't get rid of it.

I can't believe I can't figure this out... Surely the rest of the world isn't having this problem. And I can't believe that there is no way to get rid of it...

To be clear, when I say "subtitles" I am NOT using the subtitle button on the remote. The subtitles are already there imbedded in the movie. It happens on any movie or show I watch on Netflix thru the 5100. Press pause and I don't know how to get the pause display off my screen.

Thanks,
Tom

Don't you think you can. I think all netflix clients at this stage are the same minus Apple TV.

Thanks. I thought maybe it had something to do with the way Sony and/or this particular player handled the Netflix app. So it's just Netflix in general.

Serviio does this via plug-ins. See the Serviio site for details. XBMC can probably do it too, but that usually requires an XBMC client, which Sony is not. I use a Raspberry Pi for XBMC.

I don't know if this is related, but I've experienced consistent audio cut outs recently ever since they "enabled" SuperHD for me. It only happens during the scenes with loud sounds like an explosion.

Anyone else experience this on SuperHD titles or in general? I've written to Netflix about this, but haven't heard anything back.mad.gif

Never a problem with Netflix. I had Super HD early on. You probably need to look into your internet connection speed, or lack there of. Just because Netflix removed the restrictions on Super HD, doesn't mean your ISP will give you a smooth sailing all of sudden.

The problem is that I don't experience this when streaming other HD movies from Amazon, Vudu, etc. Also, I have a pretty high tier of available bandwidth. Based on a recent DSL reports test, I got 19Mbps download and 3Mbps upload. That should be more than sufficient for SuperHD streaming.

Netflix is the only one implements adaptive bitrate streaming IIRC. It constantly monitors your bandwidth situation and ramp up or down the bitrate. Actually, a lot ppl had reported here that Amazon always buffers. As for speed testing, that can hardly tell the actual story, e.g. sustains transfer rate because none of them test long enough for this testing. The speed on residential ISP various a lot depending on the congestion level in your neighborhood. Some providers are better than others. Play the video called Example Short from Netflix, it should show you the actual stream bitrate.

does raspberry have its own wifi? also one thing concerning s5100, on power up it always ejects by itself, how do i stop that? it didnt used to do that, im thinking maybe its something to do with the remote after having it code to panasonic tv. ive only done that for the blu-ray remote, but while it can close the TV and volume, it cant change channels. it only happens when i start the player by switching channels from TV to HDMI2.

I was for about a month, but last week there was some kind of app update that completely changed the pandora app for the worse, but fixed the youtube app sign in issue. Seems sony likes to mess things up when they work perfectly fine.

I've never seen that before. Maybe turn off HDMI control in the TV and player (Viera Link and Bravia Sync). The only things that can do eject are the eject command, eject button, or a misaligned disc.

Cross posting to a player specific thread.....

I have been out of the HT loop for quite some time and am looking for a new BD player. My wants/needs are quite simple.....

Pandora, Netflix and Amazon Prime are the only apps I care about. I want to be able to load an MP4 file onto a USB stick and plug it into the player and play my recorded videos. Will the 5100 play MP4 and AVI files from a USB stick? I don't plan on networking this player.

I'm sure the Audio and Video capabilities are much better than my old DMP55 so that is not a concern.

The 3100 or 5100 will do all the above but since they are the same price ... 89 bucks ... I would get the 5100. You will need to network the player though for streaming services

well all of a sudden it stopped doing that without changing anything. its odd. Can people use their blu-ray remote to control the tv's channels using number buttons? And i cant get the panasonic remote to be able to pause and play the blu-ray.
