Really? I've never seen anyone with wood slab tables or butcher block counter have cracks.

I am considering making an entertainment stand with natural casing slabs or butcher block and was going to make them match

That's because butcher block counter tops have a free edge and they can expand and contract without restrictions.

That kills my plans... maybe will make a box within a box and attack the outer box to the inner but not to itself

What are you trying to accomplish with the butcher blocks? Is it just a certain look?

I don't think the box within a box will work either.

Kind of off topic, but, have you guys ever gotten I to building custom furniture? I would love to build myself a nice dining room table, and perhaps a nice bookshelf. All made out of birch, and stained a very dark ebony.

Do you guys know of any websites that have existing designs for stuff like this, sort of similar to our DIY Subwoofer build gallery?

A google search will point you to some websites that apparently offer free furniture plans. I don't have any experience with any of them.

Most of the woodworking magazines sell plans for projects they featured in their print magazines. The plans are usually not very expensive. If you're just getting started making furniture, you might look at the stuff offered by woodmagazine.com or woodsmith.com.

The projects featured in Fine Woodworking often feature interesting designs that can be more challenging to carry off. They seldom use plywood. They usually assume the user has a certain level of knowledge and access to a fairly well-equipped shop. I love this publication -- I have subscribed for 20 years -- but their furniture plans might not be well suited to someone who's just getting started building furniture.

Achieving a fine finish on your newly-built furniture is another important skill set. I found one of Bob Flexner's books, Understanding Wood Finishing, to be very helpful. Rather than derail the thread with a bunch of unsolicited advice about wood finishing, I will offer one suggestion: If you're going to build more than one piece of furniture, you will thank yourself in the long run if you invest in an inexpensive HVLP spray system.

Would like to make it match. Could I build it to fit in the stand but sound treat around then leave the back with heavy sound panels

You want it to match your TV stand? Got any pictures of it?

Would be building both at the same time so could use the same wood then put cloth over the components also

That is a nice deal! basically two of those for a little over $50 to equal a single 4x8 sheet of lesser-grade ply. Seems like a no brainer. Did you find those in the back with all the construction panels?

At one point my HD had the maple in full 4x8 sheets for 45.00. It was really nice looking wood and I should've bought a bunch because I never saw it again.

Just to chime in here for local suppliers of BB ply and other variations thereof, in Seattle and Portland there is an AWESOME store called Crosscut Hardwoods. They have a huge supply in stock in 4x4 and 4x8 sheets in all the thicknesses too. As the name implies, they also have huge amounts of hardwood planks in stock, some really beautiful stuff. I bought a couple planks of Cumaru (Brazillian Teak) that I turned into a set of speaker stands. Pricing is very good too. I don't know off hand how much a sheet of BB is but the 60-70 dollar range sounds about right. Anyway, thought I'd plug in for a reputable place to pick this stuff up at.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I think that i've seen the same ply at my lowes as well. It looks very nice but the veneer looks to be paper thin which is why I went with the Arauco at HD.

I know the pine in question's veneer is that thin, and why I use it as scrap now.
