Kid Friendly TV

I am looking for some advice on choosing a glass front model like the KDL 55hx850 or going with something else in Plasma. I like LED technology best however it seems that $ for $ a Panny 55VT50, at $250 less, seems to be a better deal than the Sony. Or should I expand my selections and consider a screen protector?

Currently I have a 7 yo 46" DLP which still works but the time is right for an upgrade to a 55" TV. I have a 10 yo and 7 yo who watch TV and play in the (not overly bright) living room where the TV is. I will need something with a kid friendly screen. I am looking to be in the $1700 range. The Sony is not at 1700 yet but it may be closer soon. Any input or advice on whether to go with the 55HX850, 55VT50 or other considerations, would be greatly appreciated.

The Gorilla glass is definitely a positive and far strong enough for the occasional finger poke or stray Nerf dart but so is the glass on the Plasma models. I believe the VT model does have a type of anti glare but not as good as Sony. My living room isn't really bright though. Thank you for your responses.

I have done a bit of research on both TVs and looked through the forums. I would prefer the 55hx850 if they were the same price but so far the prices on the KDLs ($1850) are not dropping and the 55VT50 looks like it may go close to $1500 soon.

So from what I gather the pricing probably won't go down much on the Sonys due to the pricing and release date of the current/contemporary model. With an almost $300 dollar difference I will probably go with the Panasonic VT. Thanks for the all the great input and information.
