Which codecs for an old Pentium 4??

Hí, i'm new here. xD

I found this forum trying to find a solution to my problem.

I have an old Pentium 4 witch an ATI x700 Pro Graphic card.

I've allways used k-lite codec pack to watch all my videos, included mkv's but I have seen that there are better solutions. However I don't know which one will be better for my configuration.

What do you think i have to install???

Lav filters? ffdshow? madVR whith lav filters?

Could you help me with this?

Greetings and thanks in advance

The bin. An Intel G550 is $35 at Microcentre, $45 elsewhere and is twice as fast as that CPU and GPU and uses half the power.

A P4 would be painfully slow as an HTPC. If you are on a budget, take Tiddle's advice but you're going to need a MoBo and some RAM and quite possibly a new HDD or SDD if you can squeeze it in. Add in the OS and you're up to $400 maybe.

If you cannot swing that does your mother board have PCIx slots or is it only AGP? If it has the former you may be able to use a newer graphicx card but I feel you'd be throwing good money after bad.

To answer your question, I recommend un-installing K-Lite and using Shark007. What OS and player are you using anyhow?

I recommend you use SAF Codec pack. The unlocked version will give you access to additional codecs that might work better on older hardware.

Add Radeon HD 6450 (as low as $30) that supports hardware decode acceleration for MPEG2 / VC-1 / H.264, so P4 should be good. Uninstall all codec packs. Install LAV Filters, that's all what you need, as well as MPC-HC.

But I think it's time to upgrade your system.

Thanks to all. smile.gif

First i tell you, this PC is my Mom's PC which use occasionally to whatch some movies or series or some navigation on the internet, so i will not upgrade it. xD

The PC configuration is:

Pentium 4 3Ghz
X700 Pro Graphoc card Pcie
2Gb Ram
500 GB HD
S.O: Windows 8 64bit

So, should i install only Lav Filters, to reproduce all king of formats in the best quality?

I think codec packs are not the best solution.

Thanks in advance.

LAV Filters is the only filter set you will need (in most cases).

Your system can play most SD contents and MPEG-2 HD contents, but it can't play VC-1 / H.264 HD contents because neither CPU nor GPU can decode VC-1 and H.264 fast enough.

Thanks. You're ritght, i've be able to play some HD in 720p content with normal framerate which is all i need, but 1080p files is really imposible to play normally, but it doesn't matter to me.

I'll try Lav Filters then, thanks.
