3.0 Configuration settings

Hey!

If I wanted to have 2 front floor standing speakers and a center (that correctly outputs speech), would I need to set my amp to 5.1, or would stereo drive it somehow?

*3.0 instead of 3.1 because I'm looking at buying Definitive Technology BP8060s, with subwoofers built into the speaker.

A 5.1 AVR can run a 2.0 or 3.0 setup just fine. Also note that if you get an AVR that can EQ the sub (i.e Denon and Marantz and higher level Onkyo/Integra models), then you'll want to run cables to the LFE inputs on the tower subs, so you'd have a 3.2 setup.

What are the benefits of using the LFE versus letting the DP8060's crossover handle the bass?

With the exception of the most advanced version of Audyssey MultEQ XT32 which has the same number of speaker filter control points as sub filter control points, on the two lower versions (MultEQ and MultEQ XT as 2EQ cannot EQ the sub), there are many more sub filter control points than speaker filter control points. Lower/mid level Onkyos, Yamaha, and Pioneer AVRs cannot EQ the sub so doesn't really matter with those brands/models.

I'm considering the Onkyo 1007 or Denon 3313

Both use the same version of Audyssey MutlEQ XT so the advice to run the LFE directly to the tower subs still applies.
