Why UltraHD is Not 4K - Page 2

The reason standard definition content looks so terrible on 1080p displays is because that amount of pixel information was only meant to fill screens the size of 28-30" tops. If you aren't sitting 2 feet from a 40" screen or less you are not going to be able to see the difference between 720p and 1080p. Now the only time you might be able to see pixelation with 1080p content is with those extra large 100"+ projectors and sitting closer then you should... These are the only sized displays where one might be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 4k. The human eye is not powerful enough to distinguish the difference.

What a silly thread. UHD is 4K. Ultra high definition television (also known as Ultra HD television or UHDTV) includes 4K UHD (2160p) and 8K UHD (4320p), which are two digital video formats proposed by NHK Science & Technology Research Laboratories and defined and approved by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

So 8K is a horizontal pixel width of 7680. So 8K isn't 8K either eh? rolleyes.gif People get wrapped up around the silliest things.

More like they are advertising like its 4k in theaters which its not. 4k in theaters is more than just the resolution. I believe uhd doesn't have the same color gamut (p3? Vs bt2020?)

To me, 4K means not only more source and display pixels and a much wider color space and longer bit lengths. Its the promise of DCI quality in the home with perhaps even a wider color space as the 4K standard (and not the EIA standard) sets forthe. The official standard allows 4hd or 4K but sets forth a much wide color space than rec 709 and bit lengths no shorter than 10. Hopely it will be revised to 4:4:4. For a discussion of the STANDARDS, see Joe Kane article in WSR this month.
