Speaker Configuration

I just bought the Yamaha RX-V673 and I originally had a Marantz 5.1 setup. I have purchased 2 extra speakers so I can configure a 7.1 configuration and my question is where is the best location for the 2 additional speakers? Also I have seen in the manual that you can have 5 speakers in the front with 4 in the back of the room plus 2 subwoofers. How is this possible with a 7.2 system? Are some of the speakers turned off by different settings?

I would like to explain how my room is set up and my current speaker placement and ask for recommendations. My speaker placement has never been ideal because I couldn't configure my living room they way I want to (married ) I have the rear surround speakers mounted in the left and right corners of the room at 6' from the ground with the couch up against that wall centered between the speakers. now the part I don't like, My TV with the front LCR speakers are in the left corner of the room because we have a large window on the wall directly across from the couch. So my 3 front speakers are in the lower shelf under my 55" TV. Is this the best configuration option that I have without rearranging the room (because that is not an option) and as I mentioned above I want to add two more speakers to make it 7.1. I hope I was clear in the description.

That is correct. Also to make it a little for difficult to the left of the TV is a fire place and the floor is concrete slab. So wiring has been a challenge for me as well.

I have decided to go with the 7.1 setup and make due with what I have even though it will not be the ideal setup but I have another question.




I am going with the set up below but my question is with the rear speakers (LB & RB). They are in the corners of the back wall 6' from the floor should I leave them there or put them on stands and put them on the right and left of the back of the couch or even behind the couch. I cannot move the couch from the wall. If I can at all it would only be 1 foot.

Or should I put the LB and RB behind the couch like below. (the couch is up against the wall). The speakers would be just above and behind the couch on stands. The LS and the RS are aligned with your body on the couch on the right and left wall at ear level.
