Upgrading from a Sony VPL-HS51a - need some recomendations please

Hi all,

I am finally deciding to upgrade from my 720p Sony VPL-HS51a projector. I would like to finally get into 1080p, with a budget or $1000-1500.

Currently locked into a 10 foot throw to a 92" screen, so i need something to accomodate that.

Any suggestions would be fantastic. And hopefully they are sold in Canada

My mistake,my projector is actually the vpl-hs60

Most will be a great upgrade from the hs60. Have a look at the Epson 8350, or the 3010 for 3d, or the Benq 1070 in the 3d dlp line. http://www.avsforum.com/t/1391476/coderguys-top-projector-picks is a good place to start comparing. I used, http://eliteprojectorcalculator.com to run some brightness numbers, but you didn't mention the screen gain, or if you needed any "lens shift" for the placement.

Used to have that model so I'm familiar with it. Not as bright as the Epson, but the color is more natural, quieter too.

Since Sony does not make a 2D model anymore, there is a used HW10 (SXRD, not LCD) in the classified for $800 that might fit your need in terms of better contrast. As for brightness, it's on par. It's also more than twice the size.

If you do not mind DLP, the Mitsubishi hc4000 is an excellent alternative.

Thanks all. I decided on the Epson 8350...It should be arriving next week.

Projector came yesterday. Got her up and running and I am very impressed.

I tested it with only watching TV (tennis and hockey).

I used the following settings/presets

Living Room
7500K
auto Iris
Eco mode

Tennis looked amazing. Colors popped right out.

So pleased for the $1000 paid.
