Audyssey DSX questions

I am interested in upgrading my receiver and am liking this Audyssey DSX idea with the front wide speakers, I think that concept fits my viewing room very well but as somewhat of new to this, I don't see Blu Rays and such listed as having that kind of coding on their discs. Is this something that the receiver kind of does itself rather than being on the disc itself or what?

Yes, Audyssey DSX generates those channels. They are not direct from the source.

I don't think you'll see any discs specially coded for Audyssey DSX. What you WILL see are discs with Dolby Digital Surround EX or DTS Neo:X, the movies Dredd and Expendables 2 being the first of them. These are 7.1 DTS HD MA discreet that are specially mixed to support DTS Neo:X, which ids derived from the 7.1 track.

Audyssey DSX is just Audyssey's take on matrixing 5.1 material to 7.1, 9.1, and 11.1 surround. I only use Audyssey DSX for material with less than 5.1 discreet audio. For anything above that, I use the respective Dolby Digital or DTS surround modes, both of which have their Height and Wide counterparts to DSX, namely ProLogic IIx and Neo:X

My Denon receiver has a surround mode called " DSX, PL IIx, Neo;X " which will look at the incoming stream and pick the appropriate processing. Most of the time it favors DSX, so I have to choose one of the DTS or DD modes to lock it to one of the two.

Sorry to nitpick, but Dolby Pro Logic doesn't offer "wides" in AVR's (they do in commercial theaters, namely DolbyAtmos™, which is great with The Hobbit BTW, but that's an entirely other level and discussion).

Dolby PLIIx is 7.1 (with Rear Surrounds)
Dolby PLIIz is PLIIx plus Heights (in CAD, z stands for the Z-axis, the height)
