Just got hold of a higher quality center channel - but is it advisable to use with my setup?

My reciever: Harmon Kardon AVR 254

My current center channel - Infiniti TSS 500 center

Right and left fronts: JBL 500

Sub: Infiniti TSS-500 Sub

Satellites: Infiniti TSS-500 Satellites

I just obtained a Cerwin Vega HT-CTR 4 ohm center channel speaker. Am I trading up if I swap my Infinity TSS-500 Center for the Cerwin Vega? Will my AVR 254 be able to drive the 4 ohm center OK? Will it damage my receiver or have any other adverse effects? I'm afraid to try it until I figure this out.

All the rest of the speakers in my setup are 8 ohm.

Your HK can handle 4 ohm loads, give it a try. CV speakers generally have a high sensitivity too which will make the easier to drive.

It might be a slight upgrade, but I don't think you will notice much improvement at all. I would just stick with the Infinity for 8ohm consistency if I were you. Now if you came across a JBL 500 center, then I would say of course that's an upgrade, if anything the timbre matching will sound better.

The Infinity TSS-500's I have came in a 5.1 kit. The satellites are.... ok, but a little tinny for my taste. The center is better, but still a bit tinny. This Cerwin Vega is a beast - it has two six inch cones, a tweeter, and a port. It should have much better frequency response than the Infinity center. I'd really like to use it, but am afraid of what it will do to my AVR.

Oh well. Got a call in to HK about it, as well as CV. I'll see what they say about it.

Plug it in and try it out, its not like your receiver's gonna go up in smoke...

Are you seriously gonna wait for HK to call you back? That could take days. Just plug the speaker in and try it!

I've got a HK 325 which has the same power ratings as your 254 or maybe less. You'll be okay trying using a 4 ohm speaker. Are you planning to play at max volume all day long?

The cv will likely sound beter...but how will it sound with mismatched front speakers? Not sure having a center channel that can hit lower than your front L/R makes a lot if sense. However, if you like it, pick up a set of crewin vega towers upfront!
