No audio: running Home Theater system through AVR

Hi, hope somebody could help out.

Here's my setup

- Panasonic HDTV
- Samsung HT-C6900W home theater system
- Onkyo HT-RC460 AVR
- cablebox
- xbox360

I plugged all the deviced into HDMI inputs in the receiver, with HDMI going out of the receiver into the TV. The speakers are all connected to the Samsung, which goes into the receiver as "BD/DVD". The speaker wires have special plugs on them that only fit Samsung inputs. I know i can strip them off and wire them directly into the Onkyo AVR, but I'd like to avoid that as possible. The problem is that I get no audio. To get audio, I have to run everything through the Samsung, which only has 2 HDMI inputs. Any idea how i can get audio while using the AVR as my hub AND keeping my speakers hooked to the BD (one of the AVR inputs). Is it possible?

Any help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks!

No can do. And before you try moving the speakers to the Onkyo, check their impedance. HTIBs often have three or four ohm speakers while most AVRs are designed to drive six to eight speakers. Also, HTIBs often have passive subwoofers while AVRs need powered subs.

The Onkyo has all the sources. So there is no point connecting the output of the Samsung to the Onkyo. You need to connect one of the Onkyo's two HDMI outputs to the Samsung's HDMI input. And connect the other to the TV. Check the manual to see which is best for each task.

Thanks for your comment. I tried outputting Onkyo into Samsung. No cigar on audio still. Starting to think that there's no way around a direct speaker connection to the AVR (which will render my HTIB as a simple BD player).

Does the TV get audio from the Onkyo thru the HDMI? If not, seems odd. If the TV does produce sound, try moving that feed from the TV to the Samsung to see if sound comes then.

Are both HDMI outputs active simultaneously? With some dual ouput AVRs, it's one or the other, not both.

It takes more power to drive lower ohm speakers.

Nope it doesn't. The only way the setup seems to work with the AVR is:

- Cablebox feeding into Samsung HTBI
- Samsung feeding into Onkyo AVR (in the BD/DVD input) - this enables audio
- Onkyo feeding into the TV - for video

If I switch the cablebox from Samsung to Onkyo I lose the sound.

I also can't seem to get sound out of TV speakers at all.

So short of stripping off proprietary speaker wire connectors, that appears to be the only way. Or am I wrong?

You're going about this all wrong. But, before trying to get the connections right, why do you want to do this? The Samsung is a receiver with a builtin BD player. What purpose does the Onkyo serve?

And, did you answer the question about whether both HDMI outputs on the Onkyo can be active at the same time?

Right I agree with you. The reason i got the Onkyo is for extra HDMI connectivity (which i need for Apple TV, xbox, PC, etc) . My biggest beef with Samsung has been just 2 HDMI inputs. If not for that, I wouldn't have gotten the Onkyo. I really just want to switch the 'receiver hub' functionality from the Samsung to the Onkyo and keeping the Samsung as a BD unit with speakers.

I'm not sure how i'd test whether both HDMI outs can be active. When i outed one to TV and the other to Samsung, video was fine, but audio didn't work (perhaps audio should go in, not out).

I'd start by looking in the Onkyo manual. smile.gif But, given your goal, you only need to use one of the AVR's HDMI outputs anyway.

An HDMI switch is a much cheaper and easier alternative. I have a 5x1 switch from monoprice to feed multiple devices into my TV's single HDMI input. It cost $30 and works perfectly every time.

If you want to use the Onkyo as a switch, then you must attach its output to one of the Samsung's HDMI inputs. You can't attach the Samsung to the Onkyo's BD/DVD input. That won't send audio from the Onkyo to the Samsung, which is what you are trying to do. I suspect you've connected a Samsung input to an Onkyo input and no signal is passing in either direction.
