I basically need a storage solution with some redundancy for doing nothing but storing media files, which will be accessed by XBMC and other DLNA devices. Is there any advantage to buying a NAS rather than just a RAID enclosure connected to a router? Some of the newer routers have a USB 3.0 port for sharing drives, and are DLNA compatible also. I'm assuming I can just plug a USB 3.0 raid enclosure right into the router and access all the media via shares off the router?
A similar NAS enclosure costs hundreds more. I'm just wondering if throughput will be less, or power consumption or reliability will be worse. I really don't need any of the new "cloud" or media server features that are built in to some of the newer NAS servers.
