I think they all use thin plastic film for the lenses. I suppose it varies a bit. The realD glasses on Amazon have reviews. The Polaroid brand glasses seem to be the highest rated of the aftermarket glasses. The Gunnar brand doesn't get much love. I haven't purchased any glasses, but the RealD glasses I took home from the theater are a little better quality than the Vizio ones that came with my TV and work very well.

I agree about the RealD. I had a few pairs around from Paranorman (Cool Green color frames) and the lorax and both sets seem to be better then the ones I got with the vizio. Things just pop better and look clear-er.

the real d glasses i have darken the picture alot compared to the vizio glasses... but i just bought 4 pairs of glasses for my kids for 24 bucks from dimensional optics for the kids in 4 different colors so they don't argue and then i just bought a pair of the rocket fish glasses since it is the same as the Oakley but with a different frame... but is has hard lenses not flimsy film

My 70" M-Series looks good but after watching True Blood the other night you really get a sense of how bad the Smart Dimming really is.

Didn't look horrible but a lot of blooming on the darker scenes and some washout in black areas where the corner LED's are shining bright bright light to center of the screen to light a certain spot ... and the blooming light area passes through the all black spots and washes it our a bit and makes a little gray.

I am really gonna start researching the Sony and maybe make the switch and check it out.

Then if the Sony sucks I will go back to the M-Series and Cross ALL my fingers that at that point a newer panel will look better.

falconman515, do you have any pics of what you are seeing? I have only seen both the Sony and Vizios in stores under bright lights, so no real way to compare. I can get the 70" Sony for $2099 and no tax at the NEX right now, but am a little reluctant to pull the trigger just yet because of the horrible off axis viewing and color issues (read Sony thread about lavender lips and pasty flesh tones...I have seen this too first hand). I do not see these issues with the Vizio sets in the stores. I would rather spend the extra couple hundred for the Vizio if it is overall better, but reading your posts and others like it regarding flashlighting, DSE, etc. makes me wonder if I should just say screw it and get another plasma.

Hi guys, I need help.

I have a 50 inch M501d-A2, and the 42 inch 5.1 vizio sound bar. From reading I understand that I may not be able to get true 5.1 dolby digital using a digital optical cable. What is my best option if I do not want to run every separate device (bluray player, computer) into the vizio sound bar itself? Do I run an optical cord from my tv to the sound bar and set my tv to bitstream DD 5.1??

Or do I just let the sound bar do the best it can in changing the 2 channel sound into a pseudo 5.1??

Thanks for any help.

I have the 65 inch and the 5.1 soundbar and I have my cablebox, xbox and ps3 all going in to the tv via hdmi and then one optical out going to the soundbar. All you do on the TV is set it to bitstream like you mentioned and the soundbar should display the dolby digital icon on the bar when you are getting dolby digital. I have my TV speakers turned off too, I don't know if that is required.

How do you like your setup? How's the sound, does the 5.1 feel real? I'm considering exactly the same setup buy with a 50 or 55"!

I think its a great deal for 329.99 MSRP. It looks great and the sound feels a lot more full than my old Aiwa Home theater it replaced. The remote works well to change inputs and make adjustments to the system and if you have a Vizio tv you can control the sound from the Vizio remote. I would recommend definitely give it a try.

Hi Guys,

I've been lurking around here for months researching for my next TV, but first time posting. I see a lot of people comparing the Vizio M-Series to the Sony 550/520 Series...but almost no mention of the Sharp LE757 series??

I can't seem to find any decent reviews for the Sharp LE757 series anywhere else either, and it definitely looks like its a direct competitor to the Sony and Vizio...is there a reason no one is considering this TV? I've pretty much narrowed it down to those 3 myself (60 inches)

Thanks all!

Perhaps one reason you haven't seen that series referred to in this thread is that it uses active 3D. That fact rules it out for a lot of people (myself included). I can't speak to its' picture quality.

Sorry for the double post...browser locked up
post #1483 of 8756
That's very possible, thanks for the reply!

I'm a huge passive fan myself...but the active 3D employed on the Sharp actually uses Bluetooth glasses that I heard don't require line of sight. I'm hoping this eliminates much of the drawbacks of Active 3D personally if I do get this TV

Also for most the Sharp is just not a quality TV ... I had the 70" Sharp Aquous and it was Horrible! Bad colors and overall PQ, terrible ghosting which made sports rough to even watch and ya the Active 3D is just really difficult to watch, hard on the eyes and the overall picture was very dark and dim .... the Passive 3D on this Vizio is WAAAAY better then the Sharp.

I think overall the non mention of Sharp in here is cause really it's not in the same class IMHO.

Go back a couple pages ... I posted a pic of my bad light bleed but just after that maybe on the next page another member posted multiple pics of what I explained in my reply that you are referencing here .... his pics show the light bleed, and blooming from the smart dimming dead on!

As for the DSE it almost non existent in this set as compared to other and even the 70" E-Series.

Come on Falcon, pick up the Sony and put it next to your M Vizio. I would do it but for the fact that mine is an E series. That way you can check everything side by side. OWTH you need to return one of them anyway, actually maybe both. I trust your eyes better than my own because I don't have a basis for comparison.
Hey guys just an fyi Costco has the Vizio soundbar for 229.59
http://www.costco.com/VIZIO-S4251W-B4-5.1-Home-Theater-Soundbar-WWireless-Subwoofer.product.100048271.html
Looks real good with the tv. Best buy priced matched it for me. biggrin.gif
Now to set it up.

Send me the money and I will head over and buy the Sony tonight!!! tongue.gif

I need the cash from the M-Series to buy the Sony .... so unfortunately I have to return one to get the other.

I've got time to figure out what I'm gonna do ... it's not like this TV is absolutely horrible ... with the funky smart dimming on the TV looks amazing really (when you don't see any blooming or washed out blacks due to the picky edge-lit smart dim).

I can live with this for the most part cause this TV is everything I have wanted in a TV ... minus of course the Light Bleed ... amazing how one thing like that just kills it ... thanks goodness the smart dimming is there though even though it has it's own shortcomings cause without it on the picture looks excruciatingly HORRIBLE and it would have been returned the same night I bought it.

We'll see what happens I guess

Thanks for the reply Falcon. It seems like M-Series is starting to lose ground for me because of so many reports of flashlighting/edge bleeding.

In my comparisons of the Sony520 and the Sharp LE757...I noted that the advantages of the Sharp over the Sony are: Quattron panel, dual core processor, and 240hz native panel.

Now I'm not much of a 3D watcher in general, so it's less of a concern for me. However, the ghosting you speak of is a huge concern for me because I am a huge sports fan! I thought the 240 Native panel was supposed to help with ghosting and motion blur?

Not sure many would call that an advantage.

I currently have a 5.1 seperates setup with an AVR, but Im wanting to trim down on the equipment.

The optical out on the 2012 M series would pass DD 5.1 to your receiver from all inputs (well all of the HDMI, OTA and streamed, so I would expect the 2013 models to do so as well. It won't pass DTS via optical.

Oh, that's news to me as I've never owned one. Would you go so far as to say the extra yellow pixel is actually a disadvantage?

If you do give the Sharp a shot I wish you luck ... keep in mind though I am speaking of late last years model .... hopefully they made significant changes in the panels and the ghosting on the new models cause Ohhh My Lord was it BAD! Footbal was non existent on that Tv .. and it went so far as to watching golf that weekend after I got it and just Tiger walking on the green in front of a colorful background it looked like he was a pixelized bubble boy! ... the halo / ghosting was the Massive killer and I tried Everything possible and every setting possible suggested here on AVS and nothing! After that I bought a Vizio and it was Perfect! Zero ghosting or halo effect at all (but that had it's own issues cause the banding was insane) .... but ya the Sharp will be a TV I have WAY to many bad things on and from first hand experience the picture was SO bad as compared to anything I have tried since.

But like I said those we're last year models ... hopefully they made some good changes since to keep that issue away ... cause if your a massive sports fan like me ... you will Hate watching it.

I can't agree ... none of those really are any advantage at all.

The Quattron panel is in no way a benefit (it's just marketing bro .. it's nothing). The 240 may help a bit but if I recall right the one I bought last year was also 240 native .... cause they marketed it as a 480hz (only the Costco version had that). If it's 120hz then that really the best you can ask for ... anything above that is BS really. And the dual core is a cool plus I bet ... but for most all guys that is not a big deal cause all that helps with is the apps and smart tv stuff ... doesn't help anything at all in the TV's overall PQ whatsoever.

Good luck on your choice though ... but knowing what I know I will never look twice at a Sharp again (it's just not quality ... heck Vizio has them beat in quality IMHO)

That football complaint is a real heartbreaker for me. Easily my favorite thing to watch and I need this TV in my home before preseason starts!

That being said I guess the native 240hz panel was the biggest selling point for me as far as the Sharp (I really thought it would help combat motion blur/ghosting). The rest I agree are probably only marginal/negligible advantages. Anyway, I would just like to thank you so much for takin the time to share your experiences, Falcon!

Does anyone happen to have experience on comparisons between the Vizio and Sony550 (or the 520 even; not a big 3D fan) in terms of: motion blur, ghosting, flashlighting, edge bleeding, or uniformity issues?

Thanks all!

NEED HELP!

So I finally purchased the 50 inch today. But mine has a couple flaws. Close to the upper right hand corner, there is a ray of light shining on my screen. It is most noticeable on bright scenes of television. Not noticeable on dark scenes. it is about an inch long, and half an inch wide. Looks like one single led that is aligned wrong or something. What is this called? My previous led (toshiba), had flashlighting, where all four corners were bright, but this is different. just one little ray of light shining on my screen.

Should i exchange my set? Im afraid i will get another set, but it might have more than just 1 of these "rays" shining on my screen. Im very ocd with these types of things.

Oh, and the second flaw is that my bezel has a small chip on it, ironically in the same corner as the ray of light.

I really love this set, and dont want another brand.

Any input on what might cause this, and if i should exchange it? Anyone else with similar problems?

Common sense dude not normal return the set and get another think of it as a dead pixel on plasma just the opposite lol

Just these 2 comments alone explain damage to the set more then likely ... pics help but if you have a crack on the bezel (that alone is enough to exchange it) in the same corner you are experienceing this very odd un-normal ray of light ...

I think you answered your own question for yourself bud.

I know it sucks (trust I'm a friggin pro at it lately) to exchange it but sounds like your gonna have to bro.

Here's to better luck on your replacement. smile.gif
