I believe I now know why we've been having issues with the Vizio remote
During the setup of the harmony remote system today, while deciding the optimal placement of the IR emitter, I've finally discovered where the IR port is on the Vizio TV. I was thinking that it was probably hidden on the front bezel at the bottom left corner of the TV. I was wrong.
It turns out that Its actually inside the plastic power indicator on the bottom left side of the TV.
At first glance, that would seem a very tiny IR window. However, I believe Vizio expects this TV to be mounted at a high enough level that the IR port's position on the bottom edge (as opposed to the front bezel frame) provides a better target for the remote.
I confirmed this by holding my hand over this area while sending remote commands to the TV. Nothing works until I move my hand away from this power indicator.
This would seem to explain the poor remote performance when the TV is at floor level. As I presume is the default location after unboxing (at least until you get it into its final location on a stand or wall mount).
I've had my TV on the floor stand for several days and I had noticed already that the remote responsiveness was much improved after mounting the TV to the wall.
