Can this bracket be used if stud spacing is smaller than 16"?

I'm looking at this bracket: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10828&cs_id=1082806&p_id=6517&seq=1&format=2

I am moving into a new apartment and was told that the studs are

9.5" empty space

12" center to center

I asked Monoprice live chat and they said it would work. But I wanted to be sure before ordering does anyone know if it is ok for the studs to be like this?

Judging by the picture it looks like there are plenty of holes along the width of the backplate to facilitate various stud spacings.

Since the wall studs are only 12" apart (which isn't typical construction), are you sure they are 2x4s and not 1x2s or something like that?

And have you used a good stud finder to verify that they're only 12" on center?

You can probably go into 4 studs with that spacing. Should make for a very strong mount!
