Soundbar + Blu ray or Home theatre system

I have Sony KDL42EX440 in a space where there is no real way to put speakers behind the seating area. I am looking to replace my existing DVD player and improve the sound quality. Am I better off getting soundbar + blu-ray player rather than a home theater in a box like BDVN790W ?

Any recommendations/ suggestions of alternate products?
