Wii U surround, skips the center channel?

While setting up a new display device I noticed that the Wii U's surround sample page pings the front L/R and then the rear L/R and finally all of them, but never the center. It would seem that the "center" channel is fed to the gamepad itself. I don't have a lot of games to test with but between the three I have (ZombiU, NSMBU, Nintendo Land and Trine 2) I can't say that the center is ever used. This concerns me because there are bound to be games where the gamepad isn't used that having a true center would be useful. Is there something amiss with my setup or can anyone else confirm what I'm seeing?

I'm almost certain it pings my center channel but I'll check when I get home. Maybe try it with the Gamepad sound turned off?

One thing that might confuse you is that NSMB and Nintendoland only output two-channel audio even if your console is set to surround sound, so you'll never hear anything besides the L/R in those games.

Is there a way to disable audio to the gamepad?

As far as I know you just move the volume slider all the way to the left, and Gamepad audio is shunted back to your speakers instead. Certainly that's how it works in ZombiU.

I'll test this when I can, thanks

There's a Gamepad sound option in System Tools, the little wrench on the main menu.

I don't have surround so I don't know what it does but check it out.
