looking for better bookshelfs than my polk lsi9s

 

Those Polks are nice speakers. As far as dynamics are concerned have you though of going for a better sub? That Klipsch is ok for it's price range but there are far better choices. Just a thought.

I was just thinking a good quality sub would get you a lot closer to the musical enjoyment you want and a much better HT experience. I used to own your sub so I'm familiar with it. Nice for the money but doesn't cut it compared to SVS, Rythmik, HSU and Power Sound subs. It will take you into another world. Might be worth exploring the subwoofer forum.

these will be warm yet transparent with great dynamics. you can go for the newer version the focus 160s but they'd probably take up your whole budget.

I was just having fun really. I know you're not crazy enough to spend $2000 on speakers at Amazon. I do like those Wharfedale M1s though.

That's for sure. So many to choose from. It would certainly be a benefit if there was some place you could audition some speakers. The LSi9's are a pretty darn good speaker and a great value. You could spend more and end up moving sideways at best. Using another persons ears for a recommendation is always a gamble. Sometimes you win and ...................

Its a bit of an unknown territory. I don't think I've ever even heard of someone spending $2000 for a pair of bookshelf speakers. You can get some awesome ones for less than $1000. That's why I said I was curious as to the outcome of this thread but no one is responding.

I suggest that you look at some speakers that have been extensively tested and carefully evaluated by professionals in published articles, with praise, and then get them in your home on trial and LISTEN TO THEM with your gear in your acoustic environment; AT HOME.

There is NO SUBSTITUTE for hearing them in your home with your gear! Do whatever it takes to accomplish that.

Three that qualify are the Dynaudio Excite X12, the Gallo Acoustics CL-2, and the PSB Imagine B speakers. There are many others but these 3 may be some of the best.

There are tests on these in Stereophile and other publications which will give you some information to consider.

I think it is accurate to say that they are all much much better than the ones you have now.

From what I've read it supposed to be worth it but I have no hands on experience with it. One member who did his CC with the mod said it was an improvement.

You want some $2000 bookshelf speakers and now you're looking at a $250 diy workaround on a pair of Polks?

fwiw, with that kind of coin i would be wheelin and dealin on audiogon with some great used speakers.

In fairness, his Polks did retail for $1500/pair. We aren't talking about the Monitor 30s here...

I see. No offense really but you would have to hold a gun to my head to get me to pay $1500 for a pair of Polk bookshelf speakers. But that's just me. I'm sure they sound great.

Most people don't pay that much. The closer you get to the end of the model run the bigger the price drops. I've actually listened to the LSi9's. They are the top end of my LSi15's. I just get the benefit of lower bass.
Considering what I paid they were an excellent value.

 

Good to see your happy with them since I pulled the trigger on the 703's yesterday. Hope they rub my ears as good as they do yours.

Polk LSi9 are awesome speakers, for what they're currently selling for you'd be hard pressed to find anything better. I've considered the new line, glad to see a positive statement from someone who has done the same. I don't care for anything else Polk has, but their top speakers are worth at least an audition by discerning listeners.

I went from lsi-9's to NHT 3's, and while I preferred the 3's I have nothing but respect for the 9's. I have waited for Polk to update the lsi line and really find the 3-way 703 to be an intriguing speaker. I hope the folks who purchased it continue to give the rest of us their impressions of the 703.
