American Idol Season 12 (2013) - Page 14

The ratings for the finale are a disaster. And these appear to be the final ratings with an adjustment up already made-Fox has already announced the time zone adjusted fast national ratings.

2013 18-49 3.6 (44% drop)-note that this was on a Thursday. Last year's finale was on a Wednesday.
2012 18-49 6.4 (30% drop)
2011 18-49 9.2
2010 18-49 8.2
2009 18-49 10.0
2008 18-49 11.4
2007 18-49 11.5
2006 18-49 14.2
2005 18-49 12.5
2004 18-49 12.0
2003 18-49 16.8
2002 18-49 10.8
You can blame the judges, the glut of singing shows, and the age of the show, and even the change in nights, but the decision to stack the deck against the male singers appears to have backfired.

They forced through sh*t singers like Lazaro and that Betelgeuse looking beast.
Lazaro's gum chewing at the end was driving me crazy, sorry but what an idiot to chew like that on national TV. Just came across sooo wrong to me.

I don't know. I stuck thru the season and finale. I guess I enjoyed the finale more than most. At least last night. I think it was a mistake Angie wasn't in. Her problem and she has been told before to stop making love to the camera. She does it all the time. Yes a beautiful girl and I bet she goes on to become a star. Much more than the other two.

I know this is a singing competition but you need some looks and stage presence as well. Angie has that. I really enjoyed the Adam duet. I enjoyed last nights show lip syncing and all. Was fun to see Dawg on bass.

The problem with the show is the boring songs and guest mentors. My Gawd horrible. Harry C jr was about the worst I have seen yet. They need more upbeat songs along with the slower ballads. But this snooze fest and contestants who can't move and are like rocks on the stage. Horrible. Need more Adam L types or even Angie. Why don't they mentor the contestants on stage presence? Most were rocks this season.

For me I hope Keith stays as well as Nicki. Look I can tell if someone sucks. I don't need four judges for that. But Nicki adds some spice at times and I am okay with that.

One thing about Mariah I think I learned, prior to her on as a judge I really had this vision of a total spoiled bitch who walks on everyone. You know what? I don't think she is like that at all (for most part). Yes she was a horrible judge and tripped on her sentences but she seems quite warm and caring. I think her time with idol is over but I have a new appreciation of her as a person. Maybe not the big B I thought she was. Good for her. That's a plus she can take away.

So I enjoyed the show last night. Liked the Asian guy. Kinna fun. Why no live performance by Nicki. The others all on stage. Not that I am a fan musically but found it odd she didn't perform like the others. But I hope she is back. I hope Keith is back. Mariah not so. Not her thing and please no more of Lopez. I read somewhere about Adam L as a choice. I think that would be a great choice but will never happen.

Our winner? Pretty faced girl who can sing but too boring at times. I think it should have been Angie and bet she goes on to smoke the others in sales.

I will hang on another year....
And thanks Randy! Will be a bit different without him.

^^^ Good analysis. I don't hate Idol; I just don't like it as much as I used to. When Simon was on there, he wasn't afraid to voice his true opinion. He was abrasive for sure, but he's still the best judge they've ever had. If the Pacers hadn't been playing the Knicks, I may have watched some of last night's show. The way the game came out, I should have. frown.gif

Her performances were it for me as the rest were routinely boring. The one with her Idol I thought was very good... some actual entertaining going on. Next best (if you can call it that) was the little blonde gal who sang with the band... she keep right up there with the lead singer... it was close.

Candance is the best singer to win since Kelly Clarkson. She can sing almost everything with grace and power. I enjoyed the finale especially the Idol duets with other Idol contestants. I thought Candance and Jennifer Hudson was outstanding. I really liked Angie and Adam Lambert as a pairing with a really great song for both. The celebrity guest where hit and miss I was really surprised by how good Frankie Valley sang. It made me wish some one would take those songs next season and modernize them.

I tune in for the singing and there were a lot of good singing that is all I look for.

It's nice to have roots in music history but the target audience doesn't give a sh*t.

I would bet not a single person in that audience knew who Franky Valli was. Why should they, they try to force these ancient artists on kids.

Angie and Adam were probably the best of the night.

Every time someone sings a slow song the audience starts waving their arms back and forth above their heads. I don't know why I hate it so much. They do it on The Voice too. The live audience needs giant cartoon blade to swipe across the room, just above their heads. Constantly swaying back and forth, go ahead put your idiot arms in the air.

Jimmy should be a judge, and the songs need to be more hip and less boring.

Can't help but laugh at those ratings. They went out of their way to get male singers that had zero chance of winning, and it bit them squarely in the butt. Chase away the male singers and you chase away the little girls that will vote for them. What an idiotic plan that was. Good riddance to Nigel.

We don't know that this was Nigel's idea. This strikes me as a directive from higher up.

According to the recent THR story on the ratings, this last season saw the ad rates drop by 32%. Another big drop next season is a certainty (especially with the average viewer age getting older and older-it's now 51.2), and either this will eat into the profits or they will have to find a way to lower costs.

Funny that a live singing show has judges that don't sing live! She lost points with me there! Up to the faked super-high pitch ending.

You could tell that her voice sounded different after the song, when the mic was actually on to thank the audience.

Here's something that I couldn't understand, but didn't bring up because I didn't watch the show. The New York Times article praised Carey, saying "Ms. Carey had a finely tuned ear and precise critiques" and about her performance on the last show, credited her with "nailing some of her signature high notes and singing with real warmth." Is the NY Times writer really so clueless that he couldn't recognize lip syncing? And what is with the praise for her judging?

I didn't seem like Mariah was lip-synching to me. The audio synch was clearly off for a chunk of the broadcast, including her performance, but if you take that into account, she seemed to match up perfectly with what I was hearing.
Maybe. A few people on other forums said there were present when her performance was taped the night before. She did three takes because of technical problems and all three sounded different. She also sang other songs between takes to entertain the crowd. So they say. I'll have to watch it again with that in mind.

It has now been reported that Jennifer Hudson has been signed as a Judge for next season, with Kelly Clarkson and one of Adam Lambert or Clay Aiken to follow. Going back to their roots, I guess.

I don't know where that was reported, because I haven't seen it anywhere. THR usually has Idol news first. It wouldn't surprise me though. I suspect both Hudson and Aiken could use the money, though I doubt they'll be paid much more than 2 or 3 million. Clarkson and Lambert can probably hold out for more money.

What has been reported is the first week sales for the Idol winner's song. Outsold by Lee DeWyze by almost 2 to 1.

I wonder if the end is near for "Idol Chatter" at USA Today. It's free advertising for the show that is no longer merited by the lower ratings.

Certainly no surprise as to a large degree the show promotes contestants with a generic persona. Afterwards some of them can define themselves and find an actual fan base that will support them. If they appeal to any prescribed fan base going in (with exceptions to every rule) the voters won't be there to keep them around long. The other day I ran across Angie singing live on a show... not the winner... what's her name...

Idol has now caused the Fox reality boss to be fired. I wonder how much direct influence he had on the show. Whoever made the decision to rig it for the women this year should be fired.

Not Clay Aching! Once was excruciating enough.

Kelly may be too big a star to do a whole season of Idol. Adam, though, will be fun.

Really? I didn't watch the early shows. The few boys they had left were dreadful. No rigging necessary.

They got rid of the better male singers before the live shows.

I watched some of Kelly on the ABC singing show last year. Not sure how good of a judge she'd be. If it's between Clay and Adam, my vote would to Adam. That dude was must-watch TV every week.

extending their differences to the judge panel could work, or fail in a big way.

Despite rampant rumors, a rep for Kelly Clarkson tells The Hollywood Reporter that the American Idol winner will not be judging season 13 of the Fox show.

This was also confirmed by Clarkson reps to EW.com

Keith Urban has stated that he would like to return next season.

Adam Lambert claims that he has not been contacted at all about being a judge.
