Release date of the BenQ w1080st & First Reviews

Hey all,

So I need short throw, and I'd like 1080p, so it sounds like the BenQ w1080st is my option. Amazon has it for $1149 with Prime shipping, but 'out of stock.' Any ideas when it'll be shipping?

Should I be concerned about buying a just-released projector right away?

I was considering potentially getting the w710st for now, and waiting a few months to trade up, but I'd imagine resale on projectors isn't great. If I bought the 710 now for $550 from newegg, how much could I expect to get for it 3 months from now? It would probably get about 6-10hrs a week, so at that point would probably have around 100hrs on it.

Same here - considering the W1080ST, but I'm not sure whether to buy directly from BenQ or from Amazon (I'd prefer the latter, due to their superior return policy)... BenQ seems to be expecting it in the first week of February, but no word on when Amazon will have it... I might just bite the bullet and buy right away, counting on them ironing out most of the launch bugs on the W1070...

I would hope that the firmware updates of the W1070 would already be incorporated into the W1080ST since it has been out for a few months. I'm seriously considering buying one of these right away.

Thx 4 the link. That are 865 €..was afraid that i have to pay more than 1000! They are dumb if the firmware would be the old one. Because we cant update ourself. So they will have more work...my gosh...my english is awesome :-)

I have the 710 and am very happy. I use it for sports.
It was reported and have noticed that light output is not uniform on the screen depending what angle you are viewing. On my HP screen it is a problem viewing straight ahead but no issue off angle. This may or may not be because it is a short throw projector. It will be interesting if the 1080st will have this same issue.

HI,
If your buying shortthrow do not buy it from Benq, buy it from amazon that will give a hassle free refund if they have issues of a light side and a dark side due to shortthrow tech wink.gif

Please be aware that you will find it very hard to get a refund if this issue bothers you.

They have stated the issue is related to the tech and its in spec, hardly, imagine watching your tv with a brighter and darker side, it would be returned and they'd be tok of the shelfs most likely.

Benq really need to have a warning notice on the box and sale page for the w710st stating the image is degraded due to the short throw tech, if id of known this id not have brought it.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

i certainly wont be buying the w1070 as i now know what benq are really like, ther customer service is nil!

It has no motorized lens shift...and none will have in that pricerange.

I asked the benq support for a release date in germany. They answered that there is no information about the release in germany, austria and Switzerland.

So i ll have to wait more and more....damn

I spoke with BenQ support about a week ago and they said Amazon should have pretty much the same release date as BenQ. If you're willing to risk a 15% restocking fee returns (that are not defective) then Fry's electronics has it for $50 cheaper. Personally I'm sticking to Amazon as BenQ has confirmed they are an authorized reseller.

Just the same as the BenQ site, 1st-2nd week fo February. I have my pre-order through Amazon and I'm just waiting for it to ship. The room is setup, last thing I need is the projector.

I just put in my order at Amazon... still debating between this one and the W1070. I'm a little concerned about the W1080ST picture quality issues raised in the W1070 thread, but I'm willing to trade off a little for the shorter throw. I wish I could test both though...

I'm with you. I don't have the best room and the short throw is worth a little bit of loss in picture quality as long as it is only a little. Did you see the Chinese review that showed the difference in sharpness from the center to the edge of the image? I think I saw the link in the W1070 thread.

Yeah, those are the picture quality/focus issues I was concerned about - odd that it seemed like it was only on the left side of the image. I'm hoping that they just got a lemon, or that it's not that serious in "real life" usage (I'm not going to be displaying tiny text). I'm still considering ordering a W1070 to compare though.

I have the w710st. I'll be getting the 1080st soon. I use the 710 for sports and some HDTV. Has a great pic. I will compare the 1080 to see if the light uniformity issue is there as it is with the 710. As I have stated before this is not an issue for me using HP screen and viewing off angle only and issue when viewing from center of screen.

Anyone interested in 3D gaming on this projector? I have a BenQ710ST and I pc game using Nvidia 3D Vision in 720p @120hz. Looks like this new BenQ1080ST is not compatible with Nvidia 3D Vision but it is compatible with Nvidia 3DTV Play which outputs in either 720p60Hz for games or 1080p24Hz for movies.

This sounds like a step down if you are interested in pc 3D gaming, right? Why would I want to go from pc gaming in 3D at 120hz down to 60hz on the new BenQ 1080ST? To me, that has got to be worse 3D quality. This BenQ1080ST cannot do pc games in 1080p@120hz nor can it even do 1080p@60hz for pc games in 3D. In fact, using Nvidia 3DTV Play you have to change your resolution down to 1280x720@60hz to be able to play games in 3D at all. 3DTV Play does not support 1080p 60Hz 3D mode.

Seems like this projector would be great for viewing 2D/3D movies and playing 2D games. It also, of course, eliminates the need for an HDMI converter box for stand alone 3D Blu-Ray players, but I am not seeing the advantage for anyone who plays pc games in 3D.

I don't know how the projector is becoming popular?it's not even released yet,it's maybe a change of plans by benq for some technical reasons.

Ouch, from Amazon.

BenQ Shop changed one of their SKUs to out of stock and the other one remains at Estimated arrival being the 1st week of February. Not sure what the difference is between the two SKUs though. I sure hope we don't have to wait 1-2 months for Amazon to start shipping.
