He used MDF.

Hmm, I'm getting the threads all mixed up for some reason I though you bought the SI drivers. Either way looks awesome! My flatpacks should be here tomorrow.

started putting the fusion 8s together last night, also drilled the holes in the sub cabs for the magnets for the grills. Have not had a chance to sand yet as its been snowing/raining here all week and doing it in the basement is a bad idea

Glued in the mags for the grills on the subs today. hopefully this weekend ill be able to sand them and start painting. and hopefully build the grills. I have to go out of town for all of next week for work again which is delaying these.

Fusion 8s are almost together as well

also if anyone is curious about how far 1 gallon of Duratex will go. Ive done 2 of the 2 CUFT and 2 of the 1 CUFT boxes for fusions and Tempests, 2 of the 4 CUFT sub boxes all with 2 coats, and 1 large lamp with 1 coat and still have about 1/2 of it left

Those look fantastic!

Agreed!!

Sibuna did you have any issues with lines in the paint?

I've heard mixed advice on how to avoid. Some say use as big a roller as you can. Duratex says just use their 4" roller and go over last pass with a very light touch.

Thoughts/experience?

only issues i have with duratex is that it ruins clothing and it does not cover Spackle/BondO as well as i want it to (on first pass). After doing the other speakers where i had to put on extra to get it to cover the white of the filler, this time i hit the areas that had filler with black matte spray paint first just because i went in with the mindset of 2 coats from the start, the first coat i literally just tossed a ton on there and spread it out not really caring about lines with the roller, I did do the no pressure drag as shown in the youtube vid anyway.. the 2nd coat IMO is needed to eliminate any of that and to make sure it covers. even after 1 pretty heavy coat i could still see the MDF brown color through the paint if i looked close in the "valley" areas of the texture. Its prob doable in 1 coat but you have to but it on very heavy. also it might behave differently on Birch vs MDF, as even after sanding its still pretty smooth and slippery on the flat faces.

I used the 4 inch roller that came with the stuff, and on the 2nd coat was more deliberate when i applied it and made sure to do the no pressure drag to eliminate the lines, im sure some are still there if you look close enough. however these are not art pieces, im planning on standing speakers on them and all the other sides will be basically hidden

Thanks for lengthy feedback.

Your finish turned out awesome!! I'm probably going to go with foam rollers to get a smoother texture, but yours turned out so awesome I may rethink...

How did the cutouts go? In doing my LCR and Surround builds, I had to resort to rattle cans vs roller. Any issues?

Also, any issue on the sub fit in the cutout after painting? I had a little problem with my surround flats in getting the waveguides and woofer to fit after a couple of layers of primer and paint. I had to sand it down to fit.

i did the cutouts with a cheap brush (sub 1$ ones) used duratex for that as well.

Funny you should ask about the fit. I had the same issue with the tempests & fusions (over aggressive paint) and had to sand them a little to get the woofers to fit properly (used a dremmel with a sanding drum bit _ made it go pretty fast

with the subs i had to do that with 1 of them but not the other. I believe i was sent 1 baffle for the SI drivers and not 2 for the HOs. i emailed Erich about it. its a non issue as they fit in each its just that 1 has a larger cutout so there is a 1/4 in gap around the woofer . I actually like the look and will be doing grills anyway so it does not bother me that they don't match. only noticed this today when i was taking pics earlier. in all the fits i did i seemed to only use the same front baffle.

They look great man!! I don't think I'll ever get tired of looking at that Dayton cone, either. biggrin.gif

As for the Duratex and several coats - I've found that a light base coat of flat black latex covers all the wood/MDF and any filler quite well. I know they said it isn't "needed" but it did reduce the need for additional coats of Duratex in my experience. I usually wind up doing a few coats anyway just for durability. tongue.gif
post #144 of 233
If I screwed up on sending a baffle for a different woofer, please let me know. As mentioned in the other thread, so many people wante those 4 cuft boxes that I couldn't box them up quick enough by myself. I had 2 friends helping and one was writing the correct name on each box. Maybe he messed up on one. It might not have been his fault either if the CNC company somehow messed up when stacking them. That actually worries me a little because after boxing and marking them, they were stacked in 2 places to separate the woofer cut outs. As in SI-18's in one area and Dayton-18's in another. But I'm guessing the mix up would have been just yours. Did the cardboard wrapped on the top of the flat pack say SI-18?

Things were going so fast, you never know. I've been fairly lucky so far about sending everything correct, but there have been a couple issues over the past year when I start rushing. I think I forgot to put resistors in one kit, one guy on the forum was missing screws, or maybe missing 2 of them. But usually orders go okay.

Oddly enough, the mistake normally happens when someone starts helping and throws off my system. rolleyes.gif

Just let me know.

By the way, those do look really nice.

pretty great ghetto setup until i get a new TV stand LOL center of the horns is a 43 inches and thats about where they will be when final. i ordered some cork & rubber pads for them that will be like 1/4" thinner then the wood blocks i have there now. bass is impressive, and my house eats it i can feel the floor swallowing it up

no EQ, subs crossed at 80 Hz

I like how your duratex looks much better than how mine came out. My duratex did not come with a roller, does it have a 1/4 nap or something? I'm wondering if I should try that instead of the foam roller.

Great looking subs!

Great looking subs!

I fought with a foam roller for several coats and always had inconsistent texture and roller lines. Switched to a 1/4" nap roller and had both my speakers done in and hour. I recommend them!

Thanks, I'm going to give that a try.
