I do not think that it is better than regular CD player. You can get an excellent universal player (dvd-a, space, CD, BD) for just few hundreds more. Main features of that Denton are reliability (for 24/7 service) and remote control via RS232 and parallel ports.

What you see is much of what you get. The improved interfacing costs money, especially in such a low-volume product.

It is probably more realistically priced than a high end product with similar characteristics because it is being sold to a more pragmatic market.

You may also obtain a more durable transport and front panel controls. Whether or not that more durable transport even exists is a good question, since transports are often purchased from OEM suppliers, and most of the OEM transports on the market are made for the mass market. It has been a long time since I've seen an optical disc transport wear out.

What you don't get is better initial sound quality because even $50 CD players can be sonically transparent.

Obviously, my problem is that I don't spend enough money on my music players!

I've owned a couple of CD players where they wanted more for repair costs than I paid for the brand-new player, from an authorized dealer!

More revealing still, I once owned a Sony CD player I had bought new (in the late 90s) for $80. When it went bad, I diagnosed the problem and figured out exactly which component needed to be replaced.

I called Sony and asked how much that part would cost.

$100, they told me.

I asked how much it would cost if I sent the unit to them for repair.

$90, they told me.

I told them the player costs $80 new.

They said, well, looks like you'll be buying a new one then.

Yep, I said....

...but it won't be a Sony.

No $50 cd player is transparent....

If it were transparent, how would you see it to load the CD's?

Based on what?

Like a blind man at an orgy, you'd have to feel your way around.
