Dayton RSS460HO-4 18" Sealed Build - Page 2

That's right. ~20mm is a good 'safe zone' but that doesn't mean you can't go a little further for the occasional full power peak.

Are you building just one sub?

Me or Lou?? I have two built for my family room and four dual opposed boxes for the HT

I try to go by the numbers, as I know I have a "heavy foot" so to speak. biggrin.gif

Hmmm. I guess it was to both of you. Lol, all these threads are blurring together for me. I see you run more than one sub though so max power delivered would be a less often occurrence.

The 1000dsp only does 300w x 2 into 4-ohm, that is barely enough for a single dual-opposed box or a pair.

Scott say's they can handle 1000watts a piece into 4-ohm.

I've powered 10watt tweeters with 8000watt amps before, it works you just have to turn down the volume knob until you get your new home.

Otherwise you may find yourself buying twice and reselling the first.

Depending on how loud you like your bass; I mean either amp will output enough to hit 90db at least.

I know, I was just joking man. lol.

But I fully agree with the whole "don't waste money on stepping stone gear" idea. Just I couldn't convince myself it was justified for bigger amp. I'm sure it will come back on me in the future, but I'll deal with that then.

Coming from the F12 I'm sure I'll be blown away with the new sub and only 300W or so. It will be so tempting to bridge the amp and really let it sing, but the moment I do that the moment I'll want to leave it that way. Next thing I know I'll be looking for a new apartment.

So really, this amp HAS to be enough for me right now. Until I have more freedom with my living situation.

I'm only building one now. I love symmetry and bass, so I have full intentions of going with more subs in the future.

You could always bridge the amp and dial back the gain. Then if you want more power it is at your fingertips. Might as well use it if you got it smile.gif

Chances are this is the way I'll go. No way I'll be able to stop myself from using what I have readily available.

And to think, this all started when I thought about upgrading to an HSU VTF 2.4. Ha.

Ok guys. So I put together everything last night and the sound was amazing. An 18Hz tone about 80% on the gain was louder than a 45Hz tone at full power on my Bic F12. Insane really. Pictures were shaking on my walls. I cranked up a 16Hz tone and literally heard stuff falling down in my bedroom closet 30 feet away.

Now, as impressive as all of this is, I'm very dissapointed. For some reason I thought the Crown XLS 1000 had a better suited parametric eq. It's eq stops at 50Hz, and the instructions are more than vague on how to even use this. I'm starting to regret going with this over the iNuke1000 with dsp.

Can anyone tell me if it's worth returning the Crown and getting the iNuke? Is the built in dsp usable for subwoofer eq'ing? Or am I better off buying a seperate mini dsp?
I think you're always better with a separate dsp as it allows a lot more flexibility to swap out the more expensive parts (amp) without having to learn a new dsp every time etc. Plus the minidsp is so cheap and has much more flexible filters and abilities, why not?

True, true. I think I'll ride it out a while longer. Maybe get the mini dsp in a few months or so, give me something to play with then.

There's always the XTi series 2 if you're looking for a more powerful DSP/EQ.

I think I would skip the XTi series. They don't seem to be the best for sub duty, based on the measurements I have seen.

At 20Hz and below they are nowhere near stated specs nor near the claimed THD specs.

I love the XTi series. I use the XTi series exclusively in my system. The main reason to pay for them is variable fans (which stay off unless needed) and a nice chassis, and the DSP is decent. The iNuke 6000DSP has equally powerful DSP features and offers quite a bit more power for less money, with a fan mod it can be just as quiet.

Here are some pics guys. The driver itself is awesome. Its 10 times better looking in person, with absolutely no imperfections. The surround on this thing is beastly.

I'm planning on finishing the box tomorrow when I have time. I've been listening to it the past few days and it's truly amazing. Not only am I hearing notes I've never heard on movies and music, but it plays notes I have heard, better than ever before.

This thing pounds my apartment. I'm afraid to turn it past -29db on my receiver as I feel as though the driver will simply fly out of the box. Not only that, but I'm starting to worry about the structural integrity of the building. Pictures shake on an adjacent wall, the blinds fly around as if I have a ported sub blowing directly towards them, and my sliding balcony door sounds like it will rattle to pieces.

Only one word can describe the sub: Violent.

I seriously don't know how you guys can have 8 of these things in rooms only slightly bigger than mine. Perhaps I just haven't gotten used to this level of quality bass yet. Ha.

More importantly, how does your neighbors feel about it when you're pounding their walls? smile.gif I live in a condo, which was converted apartments, and am curious on how my neighbors are going to take it when I finish my sub builds. I think in the summer time, i'm going to attempt to build something like Auralex sound isolators and sit all of my speakers on them to help reduce some of the sounds for my neighbors as I like to watch a lot of tv late at night. I live on the second floor and was at my downstairs neighbors house (which is directly under me) and my wife was playing music at relatively low volumes and the bass that traveled through the floors from my towers (as I currently don't have subs) were surprising for how relatively low the volume was.

In my experience, your relations with your neighbors are about to go downhill. I'm old enough to know now, I don't even bother making friends with my 'next door neighbors' because inevitably they are going to complain and if 'friendship' entered the equation it would be that much more awkward. I've stopped living in multi-floor multi-unit residences altogether - not worth it.

Glad you are enjoying it so much Lou!! These Daytons are great stuff, just wait...you will want one more, then one more, then...you'll see. Keep working that thing out

Haha. Well I'm quite lucky when it comes to my neighbors actually. I only ever see the woman who lives beneath me, and she is rarely home. I have a neighbor on the same floor as me but directly to my left. The good thing about having so much bass is that it's hard to tell where it's coming from. The apartments I'm in are very well built with regards to sound proofing. If I'm listening to music at a decent volume and go to the bedroom and close my door, I can only barely hear the bass. Of course this all changes as I turn it louder and start rattling the building. lol

ChopShop, I believe you when you say I'll want more. Just probably not for a while, I hope. Ha. Now I want to upgrade my front setup so that it matches my sub. Ha!

Here is the finished product. Was able to apply the finish earlier this morning and it's nice and dry now. I think it came out quite pretty, but it could be because It's my first quality DIY build. Ha.

Very nice. I think a bronze color screw would look really nice around the edges as opposed to the titanium color.

That would look pretty cool. I may look into that.

I need some advice/help with eq'ing my sub. I would like to use a mini dsp but I'm not sure what the best method is.

I'm thinking of getting the mini dsp balanced kit. Can I make a cable to go from the RCA subwoofer LFE out of my receiver to the dsp? And will the balanced output of the dsp be enough to drive the Crown XLS1000?

Or should I just go with a Behringer Feedback Destroyer or MIC2200?

Yes, and yes.

Depends on the model of Behringer. I've run an 1124p, 2496, SMS1, and now I've just ordered the mini. I think from a value point it's tough to beat. It also will allow you to apply a low shelf to help offset the roll off from the sealed design. The other selling point was the integration with their USB mic and REW.

Ok. I think i'll try the mini dsp. Looks impressive and simple enough to install.

Congrats on the build

Yep, or perhaps simply a brown Sharpie, sized aptly to do the trick.

Thanks.

I actually swapped the screws with some bronze ones. Looks really nice. I could easily take the screws out as it's glued together nicely, but i like the look of the screws.

Ridiculous. That's a lot of bass for an apartment. eek.gif Speaker turned out really nice from the looks of the pics.

Thanks for the inspiration; I just ordered a couple 4 cu ft. flat packs for my apartment, so I'll see your ridiculousness and raise you some overkill. Leaning towards the inuke 3000 dsp for the amp.

Ha go for it. I just can't imagine having two of these right now in my apartment. I have the gain on my crown at 7/10 and the gain in my AVR on +3.5. It's really meshing well with the rest of my system, and doesn't overpower anything else. But when the LFE starts rolling in..awesome.

I was playing around this past weekend and it seems to be breaking in nicely. Playing a few dubstep songs with low 20Hz bass resulted in pictures on my bathroom wall to shake. And this was at -40db on my receiver.
