I think the 3TB WD Red was available earlier this week for $130

I like these second to the Reds, but I've only bought the 3TB versions in the past. The 3TB was $90 right before BF, and with that in mind this is not a great deal.

Compared to other pricing though, it's nice to see 4TB come into the real world of pricing

Seagate 4TB External $160 at amazon

Costco also has them for $170 (until 3/20, I think). I bought 2 the other day, opened both to put in my server. One was a 5900 rpm dm and one was a 7200 rpm dx.

Did you try to register the internal drives online for warranty?

Not yet. Do you mean using the serial # on the internal instead of the external? I hadn't planned to do that, I was able to open the cases ok without breaking so if I had a problem I'd just put it back in the case.

Yea I meant the internal serial number. Some people manage to get warranties on them, some don't.

I've read that some people register the internal drive serial number for warranty. But what is the advantage to that vs using the external serial #?

They are on sale at newegg for $140, 4TB external (internal is normal 7200 rpm HDD).

That model SeaGate is an especially nice one to take the drive out of. What you have left behind besides some useless plastic and tin is a USB3 to SATA cradle that is plug and play with any SATA drive including Opticals.

$140 again at costco after instant rebate. Luckily for me, they were nice enough to let me buy 2 more for this price and then return them for the higher price I paid recently so I could get the discount. (in fact this was the technique they recommended to me, not my idea)
