Right now I'm running a 5.1 system but have recently become interested in dabbling a little in the 7.1 world. I know more speakers aren't always better.
Currently I have a couch that's the main seating position but it's up against the back wall. I know that surround should be beside you but can go in back in that's not possible. I have Klipsch bipole speakers as my surrounds currently and they work pretty well from the back wall.
I want to add a couple true surround speakers on either side making the system 7.1 and use the speakers on the back wall as back surrounds. The problem is that on the left side of the couch this would work but on the right side of the couch, there's a window. There is room above the window but that's about 8 feet up and I have my current surrounds about about 6 feet up.
Because of the way my surrounds are mounted, I can't direct them at the seating position and they will have to fire straight out. Would my surrounds be effective being 8 feet off the floor?
