Can 4K make it to Blu-Ray?

Blu-ray Disc Association, looking for a way to keep the physical disc relevant, announced that it was looking at producing disc with 4K content. We've seen Sony announce 1080P content encoded for 4K up rez. But the association has a lot of hurtles to cross. First, what has to be done to get the disc manufactured?

As a format, Blu-ray Disc is capable of handling the necessary capacities involved in 4K. But it would need to either accommodate additional layers to add capacity to the disc, or use more aggressive video codecs to compress the video.

Three other issues: cost, demand, and backward compatibility. Any one of these three could sink the project.

It's not clear to the working group whether 4K can be added to the Blu-ray format inexpensively. After all, if a movie costs more than the player does, no one will rush out and buy it—awesome 4K quality or not.

Can Blu-ray survive the 4K revolution? Let us know what you think.

Bandwidth to the home is not going to be as quick a role out as you think. People will still want a physical disk, but until the price on the equipment comes down, you won't see many adopters of the technology. The content won't come until the hardware is in the home or is at a reasonable cost.
