Do soundbars replace an AVR? Or is a receiver or HTiB still needed?

My dad's old HTiB, new TV, and new cable box aren't compatible and needs some new way to get TV sound into his surround speakers. I'm curious if a soundbar would be a simpler solution than buying a new AVR and 5.1 speaker system and cheaper than a new HTIB.

Some do, some don't. Also, just because the AV receiver does not have HDMI inputs or a HDMI output, does not make it incompatible. Same with the cable box. If the AV receiver for the HTiB has a Optical input, it will work fine with the current setup.

How can I have a sound bar that is controlled by my wife, and also provide the audio signal to my headphones that I control?

I'm willing to hack and nullify warranty.

Reason = huge difference in our hearing ability. When she's set at her level, I can't hear dialogue. When set at my level, sound is uncomfortably loud for her.

I have to believe that our's is not a rare situation.

Hey lateralg, for the most part soundbars do not offer an output for headphones. However, we might be able to find you a solution.

Were you planning on getting wired or wireless headphones?

Do you know what kind of audio outputs you have in back of your TV?
