Newbie Question

Hey everyone I"m new to this forum and have a question? I currently have 2 ATV's (2nd and 3rd gen) and a Roku2 HD player. I have a LCD LG projector that's 1080p and projects on a 106' screen. I noticed that sometimes the sounds or video become very choppy or ATV totally drops the movie. I just picked up the Denon 2313 receiver and want to stream movies the right way. Which would be the best streamer ($100-$400)? Also I'm using the Apple Airport Extreme which I switched all streamers to the 5ghz. Most of my movies are mkv format and others were converted using handbrake so I can stream them through ATV (looks like crap btw). Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you streaming over wireless network? Try it from a wired connection and see if the choppiness goes away. Wireless just doesn't have the bandwidth needed to stream high bitrate movies. You could jailbreak the 2nd gen ATV to install XBMC and that will allow you to play your .mkv files though. I don't know if there is a jailbreak yet for the 3rd gen. I think the wireless is probably your problem though.

I'm streaming over a wireless network. The 720P movies are fine, it's just the 1080P ones. I jailbroke the 2nd gen and I'm currently using Plex right now. I opened up XBMC and was completely lost. My iMac is upstairs and my airport extreme is downstairs in the theater room along with the ATV. Should I try to connect the ATV to the back of the Extreme? Thanks for your help

It is definitely the wireless. 1080p movies just take up a ton of bandwidth and the wireless network just can't handle it. It is worth a try to use ethernet between the ATV and the extreme. The thing is you really need to have a wired connection all the way back to the source, your iMac. With plex can you play mkv files off of an external hard drive?

Yes, hard wire or poweline for 1080p, really only option.
