I consider this movie buy-worthy....but the PQ made me rethink that.
If the retail is supposed to be better, perhaps I'll give it a go

Greetings,

Based upon your description I would say that the retail version must be different.

If it won't play then you have to try other ways to get the movie started. I had to go to scenes and start it at scene one rather than just hit play (tried hitting play and it won't start). Anyway, this is one of my favourite sic-fi movies. Great movie -- no distractions, just non-over-the-top action.

Lol, really? I loved the movie too but DAY-UM there was one intense setpiece that definitely rates as over-the-top! smile.gif

Just tried to watch this. Popped the disc into my Oppo 93 and it reads "No Disc".

It's the 2D/3D in one disc, bought from Best Buy (7055374).

Anyone get this to work on their Oppo?

Regards,

When I bought the disc, the check out girl warned me that they were getting allot of returns on it. Must be an authoring issue, as it won't even load.

Just got this response from OPPO support:

We would recommend having the disc replaced. We have confirmed with several customers that replacing the disc has resolved No Disc and Unknown Disc errors with the Dredd 3D title.

I also own the 93, but my situation was a bit different. I have watched the 3d version two times now and both times I had issues getting the 3d going. On my second watch though, I got it going much quicker by starting the movie in 2d and then going back to the menu and restarting the movie in 3d which worked. I was tipped off to this from the 93 owners thread. Not ideal, but its a workaround. Sounds like you just need a new disc though if you cant even get it to play at all.

In 2D I saw what looked like digital noise or artificial film grain in many scenes, but in 3D it was not present. Did you see anything like that?

For me the film really came alive visually in 3D, so much so that I would only watch again in 3D.

I also had problems with the picture quality, mostly in the dark hallway scenes. There was a lot of grain and digital noise. (2D version) I do not have a 3D setup so I cannot test if that is better or not. It's a great action movie and these parts were very distracting. The review for 2D video quality was so good that I wonder if there is a problem with the disk.

Bought this BD for the LFE, overall I was bored, had its moments, but ok! I guess this is one for the bass guys.

dredd is pretty good!
i must be a minority of one. i rented dredd via fios on demand yesterday and was very disappointed in the 3d. also, the darkness of many scenes was a bother. yes, the blood and gus were nice, and the sound was wonderful, but no enough to make up for the 3d (or lack of it). you shouldn't even mention dredd in the same sentence as the the two resident evil 3d flicks.

^^

This is the Blu-ray review, not the FIOS on-demand review. I don't think one could have any expectations about a streaming presentation based on the performance of the Blu-ray.

Watched the 2D version of this last night. Would only play in monochrome on my htpc with TMT5 but played flawlessly on my old Sony BDP 300 with great PQ and audio. Enjoyed the movie more than I thought but a bit too violent. Story was rather simple, don't know why they chose this as there are some great story arcs in the Dredd Universe.

I'm very familiar with Judge Dredd, one of the few comic book characters whom I read the premiere comic. It was prescient in the vision of militarized police forces in the future and the dispensation of justice if you consider the debate between Rand Paul and the administration regarding unmanned aerial vehicles and the targeting of Americans on US Soil.

This version was much better than Stallone's and was more true to the original character. The depiction of Mega City 1 was OK but in the comic was much more futuristic with robots, mutants, sky highways galore but the biggest crime IMO was the bike. They should've commissioned one from Orange County Choppers with a super fat front wheel.

Given it's failure at the box office I doubt there'll be a sequel but it would be nice to see this universe expand.

Indeed, one scene that stands out in my mind was when the lead villainess "Big Mama" was in the tub and was flicking water into the air. Slow motion, clarity and 3D was spectacular

I enjoyed this film more than anything from last year and the blu-ray impressed me, but I do not have the necessary equipment at home to have a real "cinema" experience.

I am surprised that someone on this forum has written such a thorough review of a blu-ray disc. Although i've been waiting for the original _Insomnia_ to be released on Blu-ray, along with all of Hayao Miyazaki, it's hard to imagine myself or anyone writing so much about a disc.

The 2D transfer in this review gets 90, but Highdefdigest review criticized it quite heavily, and some people above do, too.

I really love the movie, but am hesitant to buy it if the 2D version sucks, and would wait for a better transfer. Anyone care to comment on the 2D quality?

Highdefdigest didn't exactly criticize it heavily, I think you should reread it. Their big complaint is noise in dark scenes which I think was more a part of the overall stylistic appearance of the movie than actual noise.. Personally I thought it looked fantastic on my 65VT50 in 2D, and even better in 3D. I do agree that this is one of the rare cases of a movie that's better in 3D.

Well, it does say the 3D version is cleaner. Amazon reviews for the UK 2D transfer make it sound awful (many compare it to DVD quality). I haven't seen similar complaints about the Finnish version and my friend said it's fine, so I'll take the risk and check it out.

Those who enjoyed the plot in this movie may want to give The Raid: Redemption (2011) a viewing. Almost identical plot (cop gets locked in a building and have to fight for survival against the tenants). The Blu-ray video and audio quality is not nearly as good as Dredd, but some action sequences are respectable.

The question I have is Dredd a Hollywood remake of the The Raid: Redemption?

I just saw this one over the weekend and I was left with the impression that this may be the best movie I've heard for both surround sound and bass.
