Projector Rental Site - Help!!!

Hey Guys,

I am starting a peer-tp-peer rental site where the owners of projectors, screens and other AV equipment can post their gear for rent within their communities. The site is called SpokeSwap.com, and currently has some listings in San Francisco and Cambridge, MA. I have a few questions that I would really appreciate some help with:

1. Would you be willing to rent our any of your AV equipment?

2. Would you describe any of your gear as being under-used?

3. Do you find it appealing to earn money from your equipment?

Thanks for your help guys.

1. No it is fragile and takes good time to setup.

2. I have a travelling projector setup (PJ, sound system, screen). I don't use it but a few times a year but it is not underused. I would not let anyone but a very close friend borrow it as they would not even know how to make all the equipment work together.

3. No I find it appealing to use my equipment for my enjoyment. If I buy equipment I can't afford I should sell it to someone who can enjoy it.

Even if you don't desperately need the money you would earn by renting it out, would earning a couple hundred bucks a week not be appealing to you?

I think your model is ok for recreational Bikes. I don't see how it transfers to consumer electronics. There is a lot of risk about breaking things.

For instance on a projector someone could rent my old LCD pj then run is solid for 48 hours on High, say hello to yet more image degradation.
Some could think pjs are all the same and expect a 1000 lumen pj to do what a 4000 lumen PJ does.
Rent a subwoofer. Some kid like bass a little too much and plays it so hard it breaks. Or just plain flat doen't know how to set gain or hook it up in their setup.
Ever run an xbox in a small cabinet without good airflow? You don't now anyone who has thrown a controller?
Borrow nice speakers and scratches the finish in transport or breaks off a tab on the speaker grills.
Wanna borrow a nice record player? Thanks for hurting the needle.
Wanna borrow a DJ setup? Get your own gear to break thanks.

Ok so then only rent out junk stuff you don't mind broken. Who whats to rent that for what kind of money? Why would it remotely be worth the hassle? A few hundred a month would be a dream. If there was that much money to make there would be business that does it at scale.

What is your demand for projectors? Or at least what do you think it is? What sorts of occasions and setups do you see people willing to separate from lets just say $100 a weekend (a number that would almost be worth the effort if there was zero logistical issues on my end which just isn't possible due to the complexity)? And why would these people just not invest in a setup on their own?

I certainly would not do that. There are too many people that are rough on equipment that isn't theirs.

The bigger problem is lack of demand for such service, and that there would be scam artists trying to rent stuff and never return it.
