Is a 10 Ft Ceiling Too High for Ceiling Mounted Screen?

I just purchased a BENQ 1070 and am looking for screen options. Viewing distance is around 10-11 ft, so I'm thinking ~110" screen would be a good fit.

My room is currently configured with a custom entertainment center against the wall, which sticks out about 2.5 ft. It currently holds a LCD TV, book shelf speakers, a/v components, etc. For wife approval purposes, I would like to keep the entertainment unit, and have a motorized projector screen hidden in the ceiling.

The problem is the ceiling height. It looks like most motorized screens only have 15-18" of black, which means with my 10 ft ceilings, the bottom of a 110" screen would be 4 ft above the floor. I've read that ideally, eye level should be 1/3 up the screen.

A couple questions:

Is this going to be a major problem in terms of viewer fatigue? I also have kids that like to lay on the floor and watch.

Anything I should look at in terms of screen viewing angle cababilities?

How common is this problem and are there any other options I should consider?

Thanks in advance!

All screen companies will make a screen for you with additional "Drop" This is the black at the top. Not sure what the max amount of drop is but contact them and see.

I've got the same thing, but likely going with a 133" screen with 14ft viewing distance. Most Da-Lite screens can be ordered with 24-30" of drop... call AVS.

Another option, depending on the size of your entertainment unit, would be to conceal a screen in an addition to the top of the entertainment unit, trimmed with crown molding, of course, to please your better half.

if it bugs you get a screen with additional drop.

but if i were you, i'd break out a bed sheet or something and actually try it out. it'll kind of depend on your seating as well. we have some recliners, having the screen as high as possible made viewing way more comfortable. i WISH i had the problem of 10ft ceilings, haha.

at the end of the day, you gotta do what feels best in your room, not what some 'guide' says is a good idea in a perfect world

Thanks for the feedback. I have an old 91" screen I have "mounted" on top of the entertainment center. It spans past the center section, so there's no way to make it look nice. Great idea with the sheet. I'll give that a try and see how it works out.
