Speaker popping upon mute/pause

I have an old 5.1 system that has had the right surround speaker broken. (Physically broken by a clumsy installer)

I ordered, received, and installed a replacement (exact same model of speaker) tonight, only to find now that I'm getting a popping/clicking noise from that speaker whenever the audio is paused or muted. This is not an intermittent problem; it's happened every time that I've tried. Other than that, the sound appears to be fine.

Please, does anyone have any information for what could be causing this?

I'd really appreciate the forum's help here.

Thanks,

Zach

Keep in mind, it's the same model of speaker, so ohms/watts or anything like that is not the issue. And I did hook up the wires the same as they'd been hooked up on the old speaker.

Physically swap your surround speakers, to see whether the popping:
  • Follows the speaker
  • Stays with the wiring
  • Disappears

That should let you determine whether there's something wrong with the new speaker. If there is, replace it.

If it stays with the wiring, the next step is to test whether it's a problem with the wires or the AVR. You can test this by swapping the surround wires at the back of the receiver. If the problem changes to the other side, it's the receiver. If it stays on the same surround, it's the wires.

If it still appears to be the wires, try running a new piece of speaker wire (just lay it on the floor, we're testing here) from receiver to speaker, and see if that solves the problem. If so, you can be quite sure you've got a wiring issue.

At that point you should know exactly what needs to be changed.

JD,

Unfortunately, as my speakers are all in-ceiling, so swapping them around is no easy feat!

Still, I understand the concept of eliminating variables and checking for those three possible sources of the problem.
Thanks for your input.

Have you seen this problem before, specifically? Linked is a video of the problem in action. If anyone has seen it before, it would give me some comfort that it's a fixable problem!

JD, after a lot of time changing around speakers, and swapping wires, I've narrowed it down definitively.
It's the AVR. frown.gif

In your experience, is this an issue that can be fixed? Or is a new receiver in order? Obviously, I'd prefer the former.

Thanks so much for your help so far!

–Or perhaps I should ask this in the AVR forum?

Dang, that's annoying. I'm afraid I can't say much about repair possibilities. Yeah, the Receivers forum would be the place to go for advice.

I had a similar problem when not all my speakers were set to large (fronts large, rears small) but it would just rumble for a few seconds after pausing or muting. Not a pop. If I set them all to large, or all to small it solved the problem. Sounds like that one speaker is the issue though.

They're all set to large on the receiver. But more importantly, the speaker isn't the issue – it's the channel. From the back, I can wire up any of the speakers to the right surround channel and they'll have the same popping problem.
I posted the issue in the amp forum. Hopefully, somebody has some input!
