Searching for a Local Media Player

Hi,

I am looking for something to play my local HD content along with having some minimal online services (mainly Youtube and Netflix, both in HD,amazon would be a plus). The last media player I had was the first WD TV (GEN 1) and I haven't kept up with the market for quite a while. checked out the WD TV Live Streaming and it seems good but is a little too old for me while the Xtreamer Elvira sounds perfect but it has no connectivity features. Does anyone have any good options in mind?

You ahvent said a price point or file types, that would be helpful wink.gif

By local do you mean attached Hard Drive or NEtworked storage???

For what you want there are not many current players that will do everything....

Roku with the addition of Plex
One of the Sony offerings (probably you best shot) (although I am not sure on NetFlix offerings)
Boxee Box (no Amazon and Youtube can be a pain to navigate IMO)

the WDTV Live series I think may do NetFlix and Local file but no amazon....

Otherwise its probably better to get a 2 box solution Roku\ect for Internet and another for Local\network files...

Appreciate the reply Ph8te,the price point isn't too strict, most likely around $100. By local I mean off of a hard drive, mostly 1080p mkvs with 5.1,but it will be high bitrate (12 and over). The Roku sounds good with all it's online connectivity, but for local content I'm not sure of how high of a bitrate it can handle.

I dont think Roku would meet your needs for local playback.....May need to go with one of the Sony Players or maybe even a NetGear, do a search for the models that have NetFLix and Amazon to see how they handle high bitrate MKVs as I believe all have threads within this forum......

Roku would probably be OK if you used Plex...other than that it isnt really made for local playback...

Will check out the netgear offerings, I tried out one of the Sony players and was in for a nasty shock when i found out they don't support large hard drives.
