does max zoom make a difference in pq?

I have a short throw dist 10 ft (near max zoom) onto either a 100" or 106" screen. I have already ordered the epson 5010. While I imagine the 106 " is not really a huge difference in size I might consider it.
However according to the projector pro calculator my throw dist would become 11ft at max zoom, and as my phase one HT the projector will just be on my coffee table. Moving the coffee table back even one more foot will start to make it very close to my couch which less desirable.

so the question is should I go for the bigger screen?

any comments appreciated

Zoom shouldn't effect the image quality at all, as long as you stay within the brightness capabilities the pj can provide, regarding the throw distance.

You will lose contrast at max zoom but gain brightness. Unless you are going to use minimum zoom, I say go for max. I have tried both. Its not a huge difference. Bigger is better in this case

Blee's suggestion maybe more correct in your situation? A couple interesting posts with regard to the different variables I came across. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20101114204018AAVj80K http://www.avsforum.com/t/1226740/does-zooming-degrade-picture-quality#post_18132593

I found it interesting that depending on the lens/setup the manufacture chooses, a midpoint in the zoom range, maybe the best overall placement.

Wait till you get the projector and test it on the wall. Then figure out what you want for a screen size.

There is no blanket statement here that fits every projector, however there are some things that are usually present when using full zoom.

The most obvious being brighter at full zoom but the degree will vary from unit to unit (lens to lens).

Sub-par optics can yield a decrease in image quality at full zoom and create more CA (chromatic aberration), lens shift can decrease image quality as well.

Max zoom can also make barrel distortion more likely (bowing).
