There is a new video encoding format: Say "hello" to H.265!

Looks as if H.264 is on the way out. The International Telecommunication Union has introduced "recommendation ITU-T H.265" or just H.265 for short. With 4K on the horizon, it was inevitable that a new, more powerful compression standard was going to replace the current standard. H.265 bring one very important feature to video-hungry consumers:
Quote:
the ability to reproduce quality imagery at half the bitrate required with H.264.

The ITU also adds they believe this will be the standard for the next decade.

Good point. Streamers will probably will drive the adaption rate. I'm just wondering if consumers will be willing to buy all-new rokus, Apple TV, WD streaming box?

An Apple a day will keep my Apple stock OK.

Seriously, this is very significant and will lead to much high source qualityespecially with regards to 4K sources. Good by rec709. Our holy grail. Not. What a limited color space.

That's an "I'll believe it when I see it" scenario. If the new codec doesn't butcher shadows then it'll be an improvement, even at the same bitrate. Should be a boon for digital cameras as well.

Can it do 1080p rips at half the size? Overnight you'll see the net upgrade from 720p to 1080p, or higher bitrates at the same size.

Very good news either way. Codec improvements FTW!!!
