Kuro may be the best, but it was not the best, most cost effective tv, the TC-PxxVT50

You could say that same thing every year. The perfect TV will never be built. When it's time to buy a new TV the best you can do is just get the nicest one you can afford and hope it works out. I just helped my dad set up a 65VT50 and it makes my 5 year old Samsung look like a dinosaur--thick, hot and with a line of malfunctioning pixels. I would have bought a VT50 had they made a 60" version but now I'm looking forward to the ZT60. It probably won't be as nice as the 2014 model but it will be better than what I have. Hopefully it will keep me happy until OLED becomes affordable (if that ever happens).

If I had a GT50 like you do I wouldn't be in the market for a new TV for at least a few years. The improvements are just too incremental.

Well, to be fair, it sounds like you were trying to compare it to a middle-of-the-road Samdung from 2008. Pretty astonishing how Kuros of the same age hold up to modern panels.

But that's the thing...they age. If Kuros were still all that I suspect there wouldn't be that many for sale. We could all be Kuro owners if we wanted to be (I was) but time marches on and the Kuro isn't -- since they're not made anymore. Kind of like Bridget Bardot.

Here take your pick of Kuros -- all kinds -- buy backups -- and more will show up around May and June:

IMHO, in term of looks, you've been doing quite well if you have ended up with an "aged" Bridget Bardot. There are millions out there who have to do with A LOT less.

The same applies here. In term of overall PQ, it's hard to fault a KURO, especially a 9G. I think those who are selling their KURO's now are doing it for various reasons other than dissatisfactions with their KURO PQ.

Same here. Lord knows how long my TV will last. But at the moment I have no urge to look for replacements, not even for my "ancient" 1140HD.

Right, I think its pretty obvious they are selling them for financial reasons not PQ problems. Meaning many used Kuro's sell for a ridiculous amount of money, so I think its hard to not want to sell a used TV while you can.

I'm buying a new TV soon because I need something bigger for my TV room in my new house and I'm totally torn between the 2013 Panasonic TC-P65ZT60 and the 2012 Sharp LC-80LE632U.

My first HDTV was a 9G Kuro so I'm obviously spoiled by this. I also have a Panasonic GT25, which is nice but it doesn't even compare with the Pioneer. I've never really cared for LCD much but the current higher end ones look pretty decent when I've seen them.

The room I'm placing this TV is pretty large and I'm forced to put it above my fireplace. I'd like to have a large enough TV so that it doesn't feel like I have to crane my neck too much and will be able to see it well enough for movies and games. The line of sight from TV location to seating area is about 15 feet, maybe a foot or two less depending how one measures.

My initial thought was just to get the Sharp 80-inch with the primary feature being its size, and just deal with it being LCD. But I knew sight-unseen I'd be happier with the ZT60-series plasmas even though they are only available up to 65-inch. The bezel on the ZT60 looks a lot better too. It appears the prices on these two will be fairly close when the ZT60 arrives so it's a tough decision for me. I want to stay with plasma but I'm afraid it will be too small in my room. I think I might be able to sacrifice the picture quality for the sheer size but it could go the other way too!

Anyway, take a look at these pics I shopped to show both size TVs in my room (they're to scale). Help me decide if I should wait until May/June for the Panasonic.

That looks like a potentially bright room. Otherwise, given the size and the potential for fireplace issues, I'd say go with a projector. As it is even 65" looks too small based on those pictures, which make it look like a lot more than 15'. I don't think I'd go with a Sharp though. Perhaps the Samsung LED slimoli links to above would be a good compromise.

Agreed! Bought a 50' 111fd in 2008 and immediately regreted not getting the 60". Just couldn't do it with the room i had. 1st opportunity I had this year (new home) I popped for a 65VT50 and what I lose in blacks is more than made up in the sheer enjoyment size brings. Thought about getting a used 60" Kuro but truth be told -- I can't bring myself to go smaller again.

I don't want to put it above the fireplace but due to the location of windows in room and how it's open to the kitchen, it's my only real option for direct angle viewing and correct speaker placement. The fireplace directly vents outside and the entire unit is contained lower than that mantle so there isn't heat in the wall behind where the TV will be and no significant heat gets up and around the mantle; it's room temp up there.

That Samsung is very nice but $9K isn't going to happen. $4K is about my limit right now. I'm spending quite a bit on in-wall wiring and also plan on buying all new speakers in the near future that will probably be another $5K or so. I don't want to extend myself too far.

Thanks for the link on Panasonic pricing. The price on the 65ZT60 seems to be right about where people were predicting it would be. However, on Cleveland Plasma's website (before that link came out) they have it printed shipping for much less? Is that going to hold true?

As much as I want the new Panasonic plasma, like others are saying I think this time around the size may be the biggest contributing factor even if I give up some picture quality. Ugh, it's a tough decision though.

Worst case scenario I don't get anything for a while due to getting furloughed without pay for this stupid sequestration BS. mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif But I do want to get something soon, it seems a waste to have all this wiring done and just hook up all my old stuff to it.

Our prices are actually showing inflated from what we will actually be selling them for. We left them inflated in case something happens with pricing for the negative to consumers , then we do not have to change our pricing wink.gif

That's got to be a typo. That seems to happen a lot when it comes to accurate Panasonic info.


I remember a few years ago when Panasonic's own press release had a few big errors and people here were having fits for a few days until they released a corrected version wink.gif

Just remove the fireplace. How often do you need it? Is there no thermostat in that part of the house? How often do you use your TV. My brother has this same issue and they've never ever used the fireplace.
