Rookie needs help sizing projection frame - pic provided

Finally got everything set up. This is a budget projection room so I have an Epson EX3212 projector. Going to paint the walls with BEHR silver because the darks are pretty lame. I am also building the frame with wood and felt.

Pretty basic but I cant figure out what the frame should go around.

Do I use the screen test and frame it around that? Or do I frame it around the actual picture itself. I am confused because I dont know how it will look to have a dim black image extend beyond my frame. But I dont think my frame should be so big that it needs to extend beyond the actual picture.

Tips and advice please!

If you are going to make a 16:9 HD format frame, then you want to display a full HD image and measure it. I would suggest painting the ceiling and walls on either side of the screen a very dark flat color as well. You can also use velvet curtains or panels to cover the walls.
Just made such masking curtains to utilize s screen that is to big for my room.
Removeable masking curtains held in place by magnets up and down every night

I have it set on 16:9 and the image in the picture is espn in HD. So do I frame it around the actual picture or do I got around the faint black border.

I am defiantly painting and making it nice but I want to get frame question figured out.

I plan on painting the wall around the frame black and the side walls a merlot red (movie theater like). Also - the moves I watch have very faint blacks but the brights are good - so from what I have gather.... silver is a good choice for paint on the screen?

I would frame this just slightly smaller than the image you want to project. You'll want a little bit of overspill. I'm not quite sure what you mean about the faint black border. A true 16:9 image should be a sharp rectangle and nothing else.

I am referring to the black bars on the top and bottom of picture.

Is your projector a native 16:9 or 4:3 projector? I'm not familiar with the model, but I'm guessing it's a 4:3 projector. I had a similar setup in a previous theater. If the majority of your material is going to be in 16:9, then I would frame for this image, and not the 4:3. What you're seeing is the 16:9 image inside of the 4:3 projection. If you go with a dark wall and even treat those areas with some velvet, you won't even notice the area above and below the image.

Hope that helps!
