If you subtract out my IBM card and Norco case that build is like what you want.

I'm about a year ahead of you so as pointed out think a step ahead.

This server replaced a previous that was less.
I did it twice.

I think doing it right first time avoids that if you decide this is a must have.

Your budget isn't unreasonable.

I chose the g860 because its very much like i3 2100 but without the better video GPU. I don't need the GPU for a server so for 55$ it seenned a good low budget choice.

I might upgrade it at some point ( like if I5 goes for $99) but its more than enough for now.

Both points earlier are correct so you can't make a bad decision. I'd say this CPU is the best low cost option if you go the low cost route.

I appreciate everyone's input.

I'd like to go ahead with a purchase sometime today, having added the antec 620 psu, all I'm having trouble with finding a good/great case. I know it's my choice, but I'd love some ideas on a good case that will hold at least 6 HDD and still have room to play around in there.

Ideally, I don't see myself with a 20TB server for a good while, nor is that really the ultimate plan, but of course, I've got to think ahead. Really, I'm going to stick with my CPU (powerful enough and willing to get a GPU when the time is right for a HTPC) and Motherboard (option to upgrade to a HTPC in the future), seems as though anywhere RAM (four slots, upgradable whenever) / HDD (just need one purchase right now) I get now will suffice and the addition of the Antec should be plenty - if not able to find something of the same quality and cheaper.

Again, I appreciate everyone's input and can't wait to hear more.

Since servers are on 24/7 I wouldn't go cheap on the psu. 80 plus certified makes sense in this scenario. Sticking to 300-400W also makes a lot of sense. ie. a 1200w psu is really inefficient at 50w even if it is 80plus gold.

If the only thing you will ever use this for is storage then I would just buy the cheapest cpu you can get(within reason). I used an old Athlon XP when I built my unraid server 2 years ago. Streaming blu-rays to my htpc is no different with a more modern system being used now...

If you want to transcode video or something else later on then buy a more powerful cpu.

Not a bad option at all. However, I am not sure that it meets some of the criteria that some of the posters have in this thread for a platform that is more than "just good enough".

But you are correct in that something like this would work well for just a simple file server with minimal other PC duties (so would a B75+Celeron for that matter which has more upgrade paths)

Completely true. To get to 6 sata ports, what I posted is the cheapest option without crap sata add-in cards. Also very efficient and silent.

With an hdmi adapter it meets all of the OP's criteria, unless I missed something.

Good advice on PSU. Any reasonably under $50 PSU should work. Antec Neo or MKIII are usually available for low prices and have decent quality.

Newegg does 15% off the Rosewill stuff often.. and those are as good as anything out there (OEMed by great OEMs)

They make a 80+ gold, with and without modular and even a platinum. In contrast your getting a little more efficiency with the Rosewill but some people like the brand of Antec/MKIII/Seasonic and settle for bronze certified.
