Looking for a new TV

Well I'm looking to upgrade my main TV. Currently have an '09 46" Samsung 550 series 60hz LCD (cheap). I also have a '10 40" Samsung 540 series 60hz for the kids.

Been looking at the Panasonic vierras. I'm not sure I wanna spend 4k on a 65" VT50. But if it's worth it. Problem us most of the big box stores here are not displaying the higher end units. Bestbuy doesn't even list anything over the 60" UT50.

So is the VT worth it over the GT or ST?
I like it when the picture is super smooth (hence the plasma over LED/LCD), and OLED isn't really an option yet.

I also like the TVs where the image looks 3D, even when it's not. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

Guess I'm wondering if the ST or GT is the way to go, or all the way to VT?

Watching blurays, sports, and 1080p TV.

Wont be able to get a st much longer . they been selling alot due to the label best bang for the buck. Plus Pan is careful not to over produce tvs this year.

GT is 700 more then ST
VT is 1500 more then ST.

This is sticker and no bargaining. Also read online that the ST this year is a better panel then last years VT. Is that the case?

Is the THX mode of the GT worth it over the ST? Are the blacks noticeably better on the next levels over ST? Sucks the nearest big store I could prob see all side by side and demo is 5hrs away.

The ST50's PQ in Cinema mode and Custom mode is identical to the GT50 (disregarding the GT50's THX modes of course). The THX modes are good and while i like them, they are not worth paying an extra $700 for unless you don't care that much about spending another $700.

The VT50 only has a few additional features over the ST50/GT50 and unless you're a hardcore movie purist and have an extra $1,500 to burn, i can't fathom it being worth that much more over an ST50.

Where did you read that? I don't know how anyone could post that, especially since the ST60 hasn't been released yet or reviewed yet, but the Panasonic insider that designed these TVs basically said the ST60 is only a slight improvement over the ST50 and PQ-wise isn't worth paying more for. I don't think the new ST60 will outperform a VT50.

No. Both ST50 and GT50 can be made to look fantastic in Custom mode using the Pro Settings menu. ISF Calibrators typically use Custom mode, not THX. That's saying something.

Probably, but the improvement is probably very small and probably not worth paying more for.

The stores typically aren't useful in judging side-by-side picture quality and won't tell you much anyway due to variations in setup and adjustments and sources and lighting etc. Even in a controlled test room with identical sources, all three will look pretty much the same when they're in Cinema or Custom mode, with the VT50 being a teensy bit blacker and darker due to it's darker filter.

There are a number of threads already in the forum that ask the same question, the only person who can determine the value of the upgrade in picture is you though......Do a search for some of the comparisons and youll see numerous posts of the differences in sets......As it was said though it will be ahrder and harder to find the 2012 Panasonic sets as they are being phased out for the 2013 models now...

as far as the ST60 soes all people can do is speculate, until the set is out no one will know how it performs....
