Gentlemen,

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I am remodeling my basement and am finally to the fun part, picking the toys for the big boys.

I am most likely going with the following:

Yamaha RXA1020 Receiver
3 Definitive Technology DI5.5LCR in front wall
2 Definitive Technology DI8R in rear ceiling

Need to find the "best" subwoofer for my situation --- I am not an audiophile but want to get this decision right the first time. Other important info:

TV/Media Room: 17ft W x 14ft D x 7.25ft H; opens up to a play room in in the rear that is 15.5ft W x 12.25ft D
Application: 70% movies and 30% music with music being eclectic but I do love me some mid-90's West Coast Rap

I have the ability to purchase a Definitive Technology ProSub 1000 for $350 (new).

Questions I'd like answered:
- Is a DT subwoofer any good?
- Is this price :)to good to pass up?
- Should I consider a SuperCube 2000, assuming a similar deal (say $400)?
- Would I be better off, biting the bullet and spending almost 2X more for a SVS or HSU (thinking VTF-1 or VTF-2)?

Two benefits to spending more for the SVS/HSU/Something else:

They will be a significant increase in performance
and
If you are like many of us, you'll end up upgrading to a better performing sub anyway, so save the money and hassle of buying and selling a "gateway" sub. smile.gif

Total room size is ~3,100 cu.ft.

I'd avoid DefTech. A Klipsch RW-12d - when on sale for $300-$350 - would be a better choice. That said, in a basement (concrete floor) room the size of yours, I'd go with an SVS PB-1000 ($499, shipped) - for good output and extension - at a minimum.

Def Tech is not going to get you anywhere in a room that size. There's good reason so many members here use PSA, SVS, HSU and others. I'm just listing brands I'm more familiar with. And I have owned Def Tech in the past.

Oh --- the other question I meant to ask --- what would you folks recommend as an alternative????

Already have one tick mark for an SVS-PB1000.

Depends on your budget.

A perennial favourite and a solid performer is the SVS PB12-NSD ($769, shipped). Ditto the HSU VTF-3 MK4 ($699 + shipping).

If you can get up to ~$800, shipped, the PSA XV-15 is a well-rated, powerhouse sub.

A little higher up the price chain is the very well-regarded HSU VTF-15H ($879 + shipping).

Make it up to $1K and you've got loads of options, including going with duals (of, say, the PB-1000 (currently on sale at $949 for the pair, shipped)).

Thank you for the response! I am probably looking at $600 for the subwoofer --- could stretch it to $700 if it were life/death situation. Realize this isn't a ton of money, but that is my price point at the moment.

Svs has a nice upgrade policy. I would get the PB1000, and they have a 5% discount if you buy 2. I know they allow
you to buy one now and then later get the second at the discount. But not sure how long a period there is before you have to pull the trigger on the second Sub.

I think that while it may not be a ton of money, for most people it's still a lot of money. And if that's all you can afford to spend, there's nothing wrong with that. smile.gif

OK, so, now that I'm done speechifying... wink.gif ...I also think that a couple of good options for ~$600 would be:
- one SVS PB-1000
- dual Klipsch RW-12d, when on sale for ~$300/ea. at Newegg.com

(The RW-12d is currently listed at $350, but a few days ago this $50 discount code - EMCXWVS87 - was posted in the dedicated RW-12d sale thread. It may still be valid.)

So, I am going to jettison my dirt cheap DT option and go with the SVS PB-1000.

Rythmik just introduced the LV12R at $549 shipped. Obviously nobody outside the company has heard it yet, but I have high expectations based off the other Rythmiks I have heard. It is a 12" rear port design.

I don't think it's been added to the site yet. Brian posted some info in this post in the Official Rythmik Audio Subwoofer thread, with links to a couple of relevant guides. No pics, though.
