What speakers to get in a non-ideal room?

Hi,

I am currently running a 3.1 with bookshelf speakers in the family room. I am contemplating upgrading to floorstanders. I have read in a few reviews etc that a lot of the time the room has a lot to do with the SQ experience. The room is open plan (The lounge area is about 3M x 5M ) with shared dining and kitchen on one side, a tiled floor and glass French doors on the other side. Opposite the TV and speakers there is a 6 foot aquarium. So there is a lot of hard surfaces everywhere. I am contemplating the Bowers Wilkins CM8 or CM9s or something similar but am worried that it would not be worth it in this type of environment.

I would be interested in hearing about other people who have looked at similar setups or have similar environments. All advice or comment s welcome.

Well, first off, placing a thick/dense area rug between the LCRs and the seating is the first thing I would do. And I find in my all concrete room, that egressive toe-in of the L/R mains helps to control first early side reflections. Although I do have 9 ft to the side walls, more space than most rooms have.
Adding heavy lined pleated drapes to pull across the glass doors will also help.
And maybe there is some kinda thick/stuffed fabric you can hang over the aquarium, like pulling down a widow shade if there is a wall above.

I guess my question is would it be worth getting high end speakers if you have a crappy room/environment and can't really change it.
