Velvet ceiling. Need ideas and have questions

So I have a pretty well light controlled room, however its an open room so paining the ceiling is not an option. Right now the ceiling I believe is causing the blacks to wash out.

What do you guys suggest for putting black velvet on the ceiling that is wife friendly? It needs to look nice.... Also, how far out do I need to go?
