Philips Exits Consumer Electronics

Thread Starter
Philips sold their money-losing consumer electronics division to Funai Electric of Japan for $200 million. Citing a decline in the sales of DVD and Blu-ray players, Philips will now focus on lighting products and medical equipment. Philips cites the rising popularity of downloadable and streaming content as reasons for the sale.

Funai Electric manufactures and sells TVs, DVD and Blu-ray players under the Magnavox, Philips and Emerson brands and is the #3 manufacturer in the North American TV market in terms of total units sold. Funai has licensed the Philips name through December 2015. As a result, the Philips brand is not going to disappear as a result of the sale - at least not immediately.
Quote:
"Philips said Tuesday it has sold the remnants of its once-core business to Japan’s Funai Electric Co..."
"Philips, which has become primarily a maker of medical equipment and lighting products, has sold the audio, video, multimedia and accessories activities to the Japanese consumer electronics company for the almost token sum of €150 million ($201.8 million) in cash and a brand-license fee."

It must be pretty bad for Phillips if they're losing money on consumer electronics. Considering they haven't built anything themselves for years. Basically they're selling the brand names for $200 million.

Ahh my first plasma was a philips!

Evidently the one-two punch of the automated Espresso machine and premium Electric Toothbrush is far more lucrative.

Mine too...I made sure my next one was not though!!mad.gif What a pos that was. The pq was actually pretty good, but It broke 3 times inside of 3 years (thank god it was the one time I decided to get a warranty) and buzzed like a bug zapper...Needless to say, despite the fact that I don't like the curent state of consumer electronics and its rapidly departing companies, I won't be losing any sleep over this particular loss.

I'm not sure I'm all that broken up over this news.

The last Philips product I bought died in 8 months. I also have a portable DVD player that just 2 1/2 years later has a battery that doesn't hold a charge. It's really handy to have a portable player that has to be plugged in to get more than 30 seconds of playback time.

My sister bought a Philips upcoverting DVD player a few years back that barely made it past the warranty period.

Their quality just isn't what it used to be.

Didnt Phillips make the 21:9 LCD tv also?

They were far more prominent in Europe, at least when I grew up there, they were what RCA, Magnavox and Zenith was here.

Maybe I am lucky but a 47" Philips LCD is still my display after 3 years and it has great PQ.
Their biggest problem, IMHO, stemmed from years ago when they started offering crap products for North American market and keep the OK and good products for European consumption only.

I have a 47" LCD from ~ 5 years ago, still going strong, and it's been used a lot. PQ is decent for its vintage, and it's 120 HZ, which most sets did not have at the time.

I also have an upconverting Philips DVD player from ~6 years ago, hooked up to a 32" LCD. Still works fine.

Things change so fast nowadays. A few short years ago Philips offered okay mid-tier stuff, then they went the cheapo rebadge route. Now they're out, too bad.

Mine is also 47" and 7 years old now and is still great. There were rumors of Philips pulling out of the US market 7 years ago when I bought it, too.

Is this bad news or something?

The current government of Holland seems bent on destroying everything.
Not hard to believe that Philips is joining the scrap heap, along with other old-line friends like Radio Netherlands Worldwide.

Yep, they did, but it was never available in the US, only Europe.

Excellent question! Could be any of the Japanese giants, all of which are losing money on their TV business.

When Hisense makes its move, someone else is going to have to go.

Vizio and white trash at Walmart (no offense, I shop there too) are destroying your Sharp's and Sony's sales.

We should be celebrating that. At least Vizio is a quasi-American company.
Would you buy a Vizio over a Sony?
