... As for IR remotes and receivers, that is where I am at a loss atm. I see alot of MCE remotes and receivers, but haven't found any definite hardware that is fully Linux compatible as of yet. Tho I see alot of write-ups saying they have it working but no specifics of model #'s.
....
I have 3 different versions of the MCE IR receivers and all work equally well. I just go to ebay or amazon and then run a check on the comments or googling the model number to see if it is compatible.
All of the receivers were plug and play. You still have to configure the IR commands for your apps however. I use Harmony remotes emulating MCE remotes and snapstream remotes for all my setups.
Being "slightly bigger than a candy bar" puts it in the same size ballpark as a remote. That way you get a keyboard/mouse and don't have to mess around with lirc. One downside is that a real remote (I use TiVo peanut remotes) can also do volume, power etc. Even though I use lirc to also control the mouse, having a keyboard and a trackpad is easier to use in my opinion on sites like hbogo. Navigation is just easier with a real mouse. I have been using this:

and some other wireless keyboards in addition to my remotes for when typing is necessary. I still prefer my remotes though, especially because of they are learning remotes that control other equipment as well.
