Ferrofluid and it's expected service life

I have a question for those in the know. I have seen mentioned on more than one occasion that the ferrofluid commonly found in tweeters can, as one person said, get "cooked" if the driver is driven too hard. What exactly is ferrofluid and under normal use, how long does it last before performance begins to deteriorate, if ever?

It's usually an oily liquid with magnetic particles in solution. Overheating causes the fluid to break down much like the oil in your car. Under normal use the fluid should last the life of the speakers, assuming proper construction (no leaks).
