What I'm thinking about buying:

Speakers:
Polk Audio TSi200 Bookshelf Speakers - $270

Receiver:
Onkyo TX-8255 Stereo Receiver - $170

Are any of this items a "bottleneck" for the other items? That is, am I getting a good set of speakers but pairing it with a bad receiver or subwoofer? Is the receiver adequate for my speakers?

I plan on having the speakers sitting around 2-4 feet from me on my desk while using my PC. I don't plan on turning my speakers up too loud since I live in an apartment.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

The receiver doesn't have LFE out. So you'll have to use the high level inputs on the sub. It may not be a big deal to you, but it's something to be aware of.

I was planning on using an RCA Y-adapter connected to an LFE cable to connect the receiver to the subwoofer. Is there some advantage to using the high level inputs instead?

What mrbean and arny have said is that you have no RCA jack for LFE on this AVR. You do not have the right connections for the AVR to do bass management: set high pass frequency for speakers, low pass for the sub, and integrate all the bass signals into a single LFE channel.

Your only choice is to use the high-level input on the sub, allowing it to do the crossover. This is not the same as 5.1 with an LFE channel as the sub won't alter the signal to the speakers you run through it one bit, and no other speakers are aware there's a sub.

Arny references the Onkyo SR313 which, for the same money, gives you bass management capability on the AVR. Both work, but LFE's better, IMHO.

For clarification, I was hoping to plug the RCA-Y adapter to the AVR using one of the "out" pairs and then plugging the LFE into the RCA-Y adapter. But I guess that's not possible, my mistake.

Specifically, I was planning on using these cables:

You made a good call, because the only RCA outs on the 2 channel receiver seem to be tape outputs, and while they are controlled by the input selector, they are not usually controlled by the volume control.
