Need some advice for my setup!

post #1 of 13

]Hello all! I need some advice, if you could be so kind! I am looking for the best receiver for my setup. I have (4) floorstanding speakers at 200/rms 400/max, I have a center speaker, and sub. 5.1. I obviously want to have 5.1. I also have (2) ceiling speakers in my kitchen. Right now I am running a Phillips FR-951 which I have been using just to get by... Now I want to upgrade because it just doesnt have the power to push the speakers to there prime. I had run the speakers off of my old Sansui 9090DB and the sound was great! But, I need something with 5.1

So, what I am looking for is a receiver that can run proper wattage to all my 5.1 speakers plus my kitchen two (on/off). I need something with AB switching so I can run the kitchen speakers when pushing (B switch). But, unfortunately I havent found any receivers that offer AB switching anymore. I want atleast 90+ Watts per channel...

I had my heart set on the Harman/Kardon receivers but they are just far to much money! I really like the way it looked too! I have always had good luck with Yamaha receivers. I also have browsed through a bunch of Sony receivers that are pushing 135 watts per channel but no AB switch. I really can't spend more than 3-400 dollars at absolute maximim.

I dont need anything crazy with Video switching or a lot of HDMI's or anything. All I have is my TV and Blue ray player.

If someone could please help me out with some options it would be greatly appreciated!

I appologize if there is already a thread about this problem.

Thank you for your help!

Remember that 135W is measured with 2ch driven. It will be much, much lower than that with 5/7 channels driven.

Pretty sure Pioneer still offers A/B speaker configuration.

Oh, I didnt know that. I just kind of assumed that the 135 was X 5... Kind of stuck.

I think you think you need more power than you need.

Lets take a relatively conservative speaker sensitivity of 87db. And now let's say you want to crank it. Well.. Here's how much power you need.

87db = 1W
90db = 2W
93 db = 4W
96 db = 8W
99 db = 16W
102 db = 32W <-- You should really stop here.

So you see you don't need as much as you think your speakers need, pick a receiver you like that has the features (networking, hdmi) you want.

I just think I need more watts because now the receiver I have only puts out 65 watts each for front, and center and it just doesnt have the "go-go' that it did with my old receiver. My old one was 135 watts per channel. Do you know of any specific receivers that have what I am looking for for the short money I have. I know I could take a 7.1 receiver and make 2 of the channels the kitchen speakers and control there volumes from the remote. But, they are up into the 6-800$ range with the proper power. Thank you again for your help!

Just bought a Pioneer SC-1222 that benched at 100w all ch driven. I'm starting to sound like a fanboy, but at $530 to get that kind of performance is unheard of.

I just read up a bit on that. It sounds like it would be the best fit. Unfortunately, I dont have the couple extra hundred!

So what kind of power do we really need? And what SPL are you specifying? Have you factored in room acoustics and an average listening distance?

average listening distance is about 10 feet..

No, but I'm just showing that even compensating for room acoustics and distance, you can get it loud.

The biggest difference between the two is the amplifier, Class D3 amp vs AB.
