Thanks again for the suggestions. I wanted to post back in the event this was helpful to anyone else, because trying to get remote access to the server has been the most frustrating part of this for me. As I feared, it came down to a simple, beginner mistake on my part. I was testing if my settings worked on my iOS client. My cell phone was connected to Wi-Fi, and apparently the client cannot connect to your WAN connection if it is already linked to the LAN that your server's on. So, when I left the house yesterday and gave it a try, just to see what would happen, it worked with no problem. Lot of frustration wasted chasing my tail on that one.
